Towing Jeep without EGT Gauge?

Hi guys,
I do not have an EGT gauge curently, but I'm moving from San Diego back to Oklahoma City at the end of the month. I Have an old '82 CJ7(mostly restored) that I need to get back there and I was planning on renting a U-Haul flatbed trailer and strapping the Jeep down, and pulling it cross country.

What I have is in my signature, DTT built tranny, Smarty, Flux 1's and an HTT Super Stock 62/14 turbo. I think I shouldn't have a problem with EGT's using Smarty on level 1 (30 hp), but I haven't towed before. I just haul a few dirt bikes out to the desert for recreation, that's about it.

Is this okay to do, or kinda dumb?

I agree. You're not towing much weight. If you follow I-40 most of the way, there's no really big hills on that route. Some long slow ones, but nothing big, as I recall.

I tow a light weight trainer - about 5K# or so. Two weeks ago I was towing from Pueblo to CS. It's not far, but it's a steady uphill climb from 4,900' to 6,400'. Air temp was 102*. Cruise control was set at about 75mph. Smarty Jr set at tow (level 2), 100% PoD. water temps got as high as 202*. I don't think EGT's rose above 1000*. Truck had no trouble at all maintaing speed in OD.

You're towing with 35's, & Smarty,& 40hp Sticks, & Turbo, & you don't have a Pyro? Gauges were the FIRST thing I installed on my truck.

Well a built tranny was the FIRST thing I installed. After that I had a HOT Edge Juice with Attitude monitor. The Edge is currently disconnected (in favor of Smarty), but I've been using the Attitude monitor for gauges including the EGT. Somewhere along the line, the egt gauge has quit working for the most part and I haven't been concerned about it until here recently, knowing now that I'm moving. Really didn't want to have that fixed, because I plan on getting a pillar mounted 3 gauge setup. That's why I'm wondering if I can get away with it, or should I scramble and have something hooked up this week before the move.

I towed 2 jeeps w/o gauges from CO to Moab (read: over steep long mountains). I didn't have a chip or injectors, and certainly not a turbo...

In your case, you have had previous experience with what your temps were. How hot were you getting before the att. monitor quit? If it was over 1300* w/o a load and the chip on stage 1, I wouldn't even run the chip....

I'd take it easy and you should be fine.... let the truck cool down after long grades and at the end of the trip.

If all you're towing is the jeep you should be fine as long as you let the turbo cool down for a few minutes after long grades and at the end of your trip. I've towed much more than that with my 97 and never had a problem.

I was shocked when I put my gauge in how rapidly (and how high) the temp rose. Also, how just a quick release of the throttle would start the cool down.
Just be careful, but having the gauge is probably a useful addition especially with your other upgrades....
