Towing in Iowa

Got a plow I want to buy in Minnesota, and to get there, I need to travel through Iowa with my CTD and rented flatbed. Been told by someone that does this a lot that you need to stop at all weigh stations in Iowa, and without the proper license, you will get a ticket whether you stop or not. He said any truck rated to tow 6K or more must have a commercial drivers license, or something like that.

Any fact to this?

I'm from Pa but have been thru Iowa several times and never stopped at scales or ever had any problems. I'm legal in PA and other states must go by that!

If it's your truck, and your plow, and you're under 26k lbs. you should be fine. Just make sure you have the registration for the borrowed trailer. Might call the IA DOT and double check, hate to get nailed on something like that.

NO. No such law that I have ever heard of. If there was a law like that every full size truck would be lined up at the scales. Go get your plow. The only thing i can think of is to have a rental slip for the trailer.I rent trailers all the time and the only thing you need to make sure of is that you have the rental slip in the truck with ya to prove you dident steel the trailer when it comes up as being owned by someone else.

Oh, I know what he's talking about now. Not sure if they still have them or not, but there used to be signs that said "All trucks over 6000 lbs must weigh." Commercial trucks only, doesn't apply to private vehicles. I'm not even sure if they have those signs up anymore.

I wonder who comes up with the signs for weigh stations. Seems like it was Texas that used to say simply "All trucks must stop". Felt like I was breaking the law every time I drove past in my Ford Ranger. I wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year.

I drive through Iowa every night and rarely see the scales open. I've never seen the signs that say all trucks over 6000 lbs must weigh. Just go and have fun. Just watch for the slow vehicles... after all you do know what IOWA stands for don't you?

Nebraska does have the signs at the weigh stations that state all pickups pulling trailers must stop. I have seen the SP chase one down when they are bored.

Really, I towed a low-boy GN all the way through Nebraska from Iowa to Wyoming last September. I never saw any signs that said pickups with trailers must stop. I did, however, see the signs in Iowa that said all truck over 8,000 lbs must stop. I didn't and wasn't hassled. The only Port of Entry that confused me was coming into Colorado on Eastbound I-70. The sign said "All towed vehicles, must stop". I figured I fit that description so I did. As I rolled up to the scale, the green "pull forward slowly" light came on before I even stopped the truck. As the tail end of my trailer was about to clear the scale, the "thank you" light lit up and I was on my way. There was another guy behind me before I pulled into the scales that was towing a boat and he just flew right on by, so I probably didn't need to stop either.

I just came through there on the way back from Edwards, CO going to Tennessee towing a 20 ft enclosed trailer. I saw that sign, but I think the next sign said commercial vehicles only. In any case, I bypassed the scale and wasn't stopped.

The scale I am referring to is on hwy. 81 at the south end of the state, not the super coops on I-80.
