Towing- Hp & EGT
Towing- Hp & EGT
Can the added HP from bombing these engines be used to tow or will the EGT's always be a problem. I would like to up the power but don't want to make towing a pain, nothing around here is flat. I guess I'd like to know is there a happy medium, the truck is still stock.
Our two trucks are two differnt animals but in your question yes they can be moderlity bombed to help out pulling the loads with very controllible egts. I added a smaller box to mine not a pusher box (more fuel) I went with a mild timing an little extra fuel box known as the van aaken v5 and went with 4'' from the turbo back exhaust and I can pull my 3horse slant all day long with no problems at all and the egts max out at 1150 pulling a hill hard and runnin flat out around 850. The two main things you should look at are exhaust wich inturn will help reduce your egts and maybe with you truck a little bit of fuel and some timing would help out ten fold for keeping it cool.
My mods were done with towing a heavy travel trailer in mind. It tows so much better than stock that you would think it's a different truck. While it is possible to run up the egt's going up a long grade it is very controllable by dropping down a gear or simply backing off a bit.
Besides it's so much more fun to drive loaded or not.
Keep your mods sane and you will be very happy.

I'm finding that the EGT's are controllable, its the engine cooling that becomes the issue on long grades, especially with moderate outside temps and AC on. Pulling my 28' TT on an 8% grade at around 60 MPH will put me into high water temp by about the end of a good 2 or 3 mile tug. The power is nice to have for sure!!! I would never have pulled that grade stock at that speed. Its a problem when you run up behind a slower (insert OTHER brand name here) clogging up the road at 45 mph on the same hill...
They don't like to see some ol 97 steaming up their 06 bumper...
I think the turbo is my enemy at this point as once I get the RPM's over 2500 and need full boost, the EGT's go right to the red in a hurry. That 12cm housing is eating my lunch...LOL..

You can have a good bit of power, and have good EGT's. Right now I think my truck is setup about perfect for hauling. Hauled my preachers CTD the other day, and it did great. EGT's will get to 1350* or so, but only if you keep your foot buried through the floor on a hill or something. Its plenty stout for pulling, and it runs plenty good for a daily driver too. Im happy with how mine is setup.......at least for now.

I tow with my truck all day long. The twins really keep it cool with boost. I built this truck for towing only. Mach 2's would mean that I wouldnt have to let off at all. On long pulls, I have to let up around 45 seconds into it. Even 60psi cant cool it. I only had to let the radiator cool once since I had the truck and that was pulling my 35,000 lb load through canada. It was an 8% grade for about 7-8 miles around pink mountain. Even downshifting from 4 to 3rd didnt cool it.
