Towing And Egt's

I have a 2005 3/4 ton[auto]. Just installed my gauges and also put in the superchips flash paq. I pull a 30' 5'er that weighs about 11500 loaded pulling to yellowstone from utah on highway 20 through island park Iwas having to back out of it because of egt's[1350] and half throttle. just wondering if that was normal? flat ground running 73mph egt's are somewhere around 1000 to 1100 is this normal. Does running with different tailgate [louvered] help with wind and fuel economy?

My understanding is that around 12 should be the limit.

for a 04.5-06 1350deg should be your max. 1000-1100 is not bad.

Besides a Super B turbo, my truck is stock. My max egt's are 1200 towing about 4k. I have read on some of these forums that common rail trucks are good up to 1500 for short periods. I think 1350 with your load is fine. My brother 2002 defuels at about 1150. But his isn't a common rail. When I get a programmer, Iknow my egt's will rise, hopefully not past 1500 though. Either way, sounds like your egt's are safe.

Also, when I'm empty and driving the speed limit up hills, I get up to 900 easily. Hope this helps.

um, ill run 1450 towing uphill and not be worried. the new 04.5+ trucks have special heat coating. they can take 1450 easily. ive seen 1550 down the 1/4 mile and 1600 for about 10 seconds. You can pull at 1450. Dont backdown at 1350. 1450 is perfectly fine.

I hit 1250-1350 all the time towing a 10k travel trailer on major grades. All stock w/ pre-turbo gauge, no problems in the first 15k miles...

Good luck with your '06.

Are not different temps seen depending on "where" pre-turbo the sensor is located?

Mine is between 3 and 4 and I'm told that is one of the hottest locations. Those pre-turbo mounted in the downtube of the manifold probably see the "average" or coolest temps pre-turbo.

I'm just not sure when quoting temps pre-turbo we are comparing apples to apples. Please inform me since I just installed my gauges and trying to learn.

I have my Commander set to defuel at 1350* EGT when pulling our 11k 5th wheel and it has yet to do so. We have run in 100* + temps and some pretty good hills and it has never gotten to the point of defueling. My probe is pre-turbo.
