Towing with a 93 Auto 2wd
Towing with a 93 Auto 2wd
Hey Guys
I have a little farmall super c (weighs around 3500lbs) I plan to take to a few shows. I have a little 20+5 gooseneck deck over trailer that weighs around 4k max empty. Had it built light to pull with a 2011 1/2 ton Chevrolet and it did fine. My question is, would you guys go 100 miles from home with my setup with that a518 trans? Will have a few hills to climb? Trans seems to shift fine. Just wondering. I dont have the $$$$ right now for a build or a converter, besides, I really want a 5 speed.

Shouldn't be any problem at all. The A 518 being a non locking transmission picks up a bit of cool and fuel mileage with a low stall converter. Stock guts can take stock HP all day. If you're going to turn up the engine, it would be worthwhile to build it up a bit.
I pulled an 8000 lb fiver which would have about 4 times the wind resistance of your rig across the prairie in 95 degree heat at 65 - 70 with a bone stock transmission. It did have the factory fan cooled frame mounted cooler.

Thanks.
I don't believe I have any extra coolers on my truck. It has never towed heavy. It was a highway truck all its life. I just installed a gooseneck hitch, and brake controller. Only mods done are muffler cut off, Fuel screw turned 3/4 turn. Star wheel turned 1/2 turn, and the fuel pin turned. It doesnt smoke at all when I get in it so I'm assuming the egt's will be OK? Also should I run with OD off the entire time I'm towing? Sorry for all the questions. Im just paranoid. I'm trying to take care of my ol truck, Its all I got.
Thanks
Drew

I just get paranoid reading what people say about the transmission. Some folks make out like you cant use them for anything but driving, and you better baby it then. Anyway, I guess if you drive it sensible it should be ok. I don't cowboy around, so im hoping I will be ok. Im going to try to have the bands adjusted soon.
Thanks for the advice!!!!!
Drew
