Towing with 4x4 vs 4x2
I have a 12 yr old 5er that is pretty low to gound. Currently towing with an older D250 4x2. I had ordered a 03 4x2 but may not get it due to a paint problem (being held indefinetly) so I was considering buying a 4x4 off the lot as there is no 4x2s around.
I cracked an axel last year and do not want to stress any of the components. My question is, is it practical to lift an older trailer 4 or 5 inches to make up the difference? If so I might look at a 4x4 rather than reorder and wait another 12 weeks.
thanks [undecided]
Re:Towing with 4x4 vs 4x2
sullivad,
I know what you mean by the older campers. I had a 1985 Nomad 5er when I bought my 99 Ram. Even the 4x2 Ram sat alot higher than my previous F-150, which made the 5er ride "nose high". I did some adjusting on my hitch which helped a little, but it still seemed like there was more weight on the rear axle than there was on the front axle of the 5er. I never looked into flipping the axles on it, but I guess it would have helped. I think I was putting more stress on the rear axle that way rather than if I would have done the flip.
The new camper sits real level when hooked up, but I think all of the manufacturers are making them that way now. I think you or a shop you can trust, will have to really inspect your trailer suspension and frame in order to make a decision on whether or not you should try and lift your 5er.
The 4x4 Rams really sit up there too. Hope you find out something that works.

Sullivad,
The same principals will apply to your older trailer in mounting the spring perches on top of the axle. That said, however, I'm not sure you will get enough increase to clear a 4X4 bed. You may need to add a subframe for the springs to gain enough bed clearance on a new truck as the 4xs sit quite high.
Either way, good luck.

Bill

Thanks guys;
I talked to the shop today that does this work. They are confident that they can do it as they had done many others of the same type by moving the springs on top and adding some steel under the frame.
Now to try and find a truck.
