I was also going to say the 101 frwy grade by Camarillo coming back from Ventura is a steep little mother too. I used to get all sweaty palms heading into that hill. Now I'm hitting the hill at 60mph, dropping into 2nd gear when I hit 50mph and I let it "chug chug chug" up the hill doing 50 while I'm sipping a Mountain Dew

Haven't had one of those in a while. I always like Squirt and Cactus Cooler

I know! That's why I was trying to get a comparo between what over folks have been seeing under similar circumstances. I will be going back up that same pass next week with a Dodge Dakota (3500lbs) and U-Haul tow dolly (500lbs) so my load will be a little over half of what I was pulling up yesterday...we'll see what numbers that pass brings. If it starts warming up again, I'll kick down a gear...but I don't think they will get close to that. I can hardly feel 4k behind me.

I can motor up the Cajon pass with about a 10,000 lbs load (9000 lb travel trailer and 1000 lbs of motorcycles and gear in the bed) at 60-65 mph and not hit 1400*. That's with 35" tires and 3.73 and the Quad box on 60 h.p. But the Cajon is only about 10 miles of grade and averages about 5% with a couple mile stretch of 6% at the top.

You lock out OD for that...I would assume so, as if you were IN OD, you would be lugging kinda bad...I'm kinda confused I guess. Maybe I should have turned my boxes on...maybe that would have helped out a bit...either way, I was only going about 5mph faster than you were and was running at 2200RPMs...and I had 3k less behind my truck than you did...Is Cajon pass the name of that stretch that goes from the 8E on up to Campo to 4200ft elevations or are you talking about somewhere else?
Yeah, if I remember right I was cruising up in 3rd with the torque converter locked. I'm guessing I was around 2400-2500 rpm or so. Keep the rpm up and the speed reasonable and you'll keep your cool.
The Cajon pass is on the 15 freeway just north of the 10 and 210 freeway. It connects the Inland Empire (San Bernardino/Rialto area) to the high desert (Hesperia, Oak Hills, Victorville area). You would go up if on your way to Las Vegas.
