Tow RV for dealer-how much to charge?

We are having a "RV/ Outdoor Show" in our town next weekend. There will be several dealers there displaying their RV units. I called one of the dealers to see if they ever hire people to move the RV's from the lot to the sale spot (about 55 miles one way). I told the dealer that I had a truck set up to pull almost any size RV.
He said "I'll pay for the fuel, but how much do you charge?" I explained to him that I have a 35 ft 5th wheel of my own ,but that I usually do not do this type hauling. And that I did not know how much $$. He said to think about it and call him back. What should I say? Him pay the fuel plus $1 per mile? More or less? Not worth messing with?

Thanks for any input.....

I've never done this kind of thing, but in thinking things over, I would ask the dealer if his insurance will cover the unit you are towing while in transit. If not, check with your insurance person. Chances are that nothing will happen, but if it does, you don't want to end up in a deep financial hole because you were trying to earn a little extra cash.

I agree $1.25 is good pay if y'all can get it.....you can't charge a customer for deadhead miles either.....even at $1.25 a mile loaded its close to break even after everything gets figured in,insurance, fuel, labor, maintenance, wear and tear, licence fees, ect

I lucked out last year and got a Xmas tree run, because they needed these trees moved ASAP I got paid both ways even unloaded because they didn't want me gettin back hauls that mite delay me they paid all miles

I have done a few pulls for people and charge per loaded mile. since I have my truck payment if I make money from it or not I figure anything is better than nothing i usually quote $1. a loaded mile, most try to negotiate a lower price, but I need the $ so I settle. I hauled a Jeep 1000 miles for $650 a couple months ago. got another one coming up that'll be charlotte to VA beach(400 miles) $400.

I really enjoy it but would like to find alot more work, and stay on the E coast. I just don't know where to look for the jobs...

Rates quoted from an rv delivery site that might help you, 1 to 300 miles $315.00 flate rate and then 1.05 a mile after that.

well I dont mean to sound mean,......but you low ballers are the source of your own problems......The ans. is charge what it is worth or do not do it!!
If you get under bid find out why- do they have a dot ## are they insured and stuff.
If not,, turn them in to the DOT as I do..we should all have to play by the same rules.

Cool

These Posts are exactly why I joined this forum. Information! Too bad there is not a standard in place for hauling Rates. Sounds like whatever is negotiated?

You want a standard.........thats called big bro teling you what to do -where will it stop
how much to pay/charge for everthing?.......called sosialism
Besides the trucking reform has allready happend -free enterprize is better.........al i am saying is if you get you butt kicked hard on the bid there is 3 things wrong
1 the other guy is not paying the over head you are (no taxes, DOT ,cc#s and the like, so he can be cheaper.
2 He thinks that it can be made up by vollume
3 You are too high price wise.
A wise person told me 'if you are winning all the bids your too low and peo will get used to it '(not a good thing)
You should be winning some -in the middle, not all and not none.
And be quick to educate the shipper what he is paying for when he uses you and when he dose not- is the other 'legal.is the load insured? and stuff. You have to be your best advertizing agency.
Are ya getting my pt mattes!
