Is this too wide?

We are about to get a new boat that is 9 foot 6 inches wide by itself with no trailer. It is a 29 foot Regulator that will weigh about 10,000 pounds with trailer, fuel and motors. A lot of people around us at the coast are pulling 36 foot contenders that are 10 foot wide with not trailer and many other bigger center consoles. Do i need a permit to tow this? Some of the big fith wheels have to be this wide righ? thanks.

That boat would be 12" wider than what is concidered 'legal'. You would need an oversize load permit to pull it on the highway. Legal height is 13'6" so if you are over that you need to permit the load also. Motorhomes and fifthwheels are normaly 8' wide.

You will need a permit for it to be legal, BUT I know many, many boaters that tow their rigs around overwidth and have never had a problem!! Good luck.

Hey mcmopar I see you are from Raleigh too. We have a house down in Topsail and fish all the time. One more question. How wide is a normal road?

Not sure how wide the road is, but in most of the states that I have pulled a trailer 102-108" wide is about the limit. My father pulls around a 43' Black Thunder with a pair of Bulldogs and he is overwidth, about 9'6" too. He has never had any trouble. He has pulled this thing up and down the east coast and even from NY to Alabama.

I think 102" is the DOT max before permit is required.

But you and others are right; boats this size get trailer'ed all the time.

"Extra wide" RV's like ours are 102" wide. They allow protrusions beyond the 102" limit for things like rolled-up awnings, but that's it. Anything wider is supposed to be a permit load.
