I know this isn't a Dodge truck. But, this pictures just goes to show why you shouldn't tow more then your vehicle is rated for. Jeep Cherekee towing a 32 foot travel trailer does not mix. Trailer jack-knifed after the jeep struck a vehicle. Jeep then struck a traffic light standard. This happened on 11/10 in eastern PA.

 

I hope everyone was ok. Thats a real mess. :-

If they weren't OK, I hope they haven't reproduced yet. How could anybody who can tie their own shoes not realize that trailer is more than a little too big for a Cherokee?

 

Man. That is ridiculous. This is the most I've done with my old Cherokee and I did it going about 25mph the whole time with my hazards on.

Gee, and I thought there was NO LIMIT to what you could tow with any vehicle. Seems to me I heard a trailer salesman tell me that I could pull a 12,000 pound fifth wheel trailer with my 93 Dakota. Of course it had a V-8.

Just kidding but a picture is worth a thousand words. And yes the salesman told me that. Never went back.

We've all seen the posts where folks have posted the "you won't believe what I saw being towed on the highway today"; and we all joke about those idiots and their total disregard for everyones general safety.

Its a shame that some folks are so irresponsible, or worse, if they are aware but carry the "it'll never happen to me" attitude.

Guess what, it can.

Its ok if they want to submit an application for the Darwin Awards for themselves, but if they had children with them.... those kids didn't sign up for that.

 

man, it's one thing overloading a 3500 cummins by a couple thousand, but that's rediculous on a cherokee. sure, if it was one of those farmer seriously overloading issues, fine, but to have that small a vehicle towing a trailer what, maybe 5000 pounds or so loaded isn't smart.

Saw a guy driving a fork-lift the other day towing a 35ft 5er.

Last July saw a Jeep G Cherokee that had been towing 30 ft trailer on Alaska Hwy. Lost it coming down one of those 7% 2 mi long grades. That must have been "Mr.Toad's Wild Ride". The trailer got in front of the Jeep dragging it backwards down the hill. At the bottom the combo jacknifed and flipped on its side blocking both lanes. Fortunately the Jeep lived up to its rugged reputation and the passengers had only minor injuries.

 

Weight is not always the factor, its size and stabily vs power and braking. But on a bumper pull what a moron.

We all have near blonde moments, lead vehicle geometry especially with a ball hitch is essential to stasbilty, testing the limits, its not the smartest thing to do especially for the inexperienced.

I bet he didnt have trailer brakes either


You know youre right you hear about these idiots and you see them doing this stuff and they never get caught. Then you have guys who pull for a living or at least regularly a get stopped and scaled in many different states or are being cited with a warning for being 2' over length on a california highway. I used to pull a 24' goose and a 14' ball (65' with the lead truck) with stabilizers on the second trailer all over the west. somepeople dont understand how to setup thier brakes properly.

Just this past weekend I drove past a guy broken down on the highway. It was a mercury sable pulling like a 24 to 26 footer. It was a 70's era trailer so probably pretty heavy.

He was standing there with the hood up scratching his head.
Ten bucks says his tranny is smoke. Some people just have to learn the hard way.

My Jeep Cherokee's max towing capacity was 5000# and I KNOW you are CRAZY if you tow 5000# in a Cherokee...

How will my Ram feel if I tow to it's max towing capacity (about 13,000#)?

I've towed half of that with absolultely no problem.
