Thinkin about changin rears

I have a 92 CTD in a W350 4x4 5sp. I am runnin 354's with 33" tires. I am pullin a fifth wheel that grosses at around 11500. Needlesst to say this rear is not the best choice. Almost any incline with the camper required a down shift and that will even bring me down to 50 mph I am just thinkin here. Would it be smart to go with a lower rear? I am thinkin 410's. Would the expence of changin rears be to costley? You guy's that are set up with 33" tires and 410's what are your rpm's @ 65mph? Would I expect the same or better milage since the engine would be workin a bit less even though the rpm would be higher? I guess i am asking would this be a good all around ratio, or when empty would it run me broke in fuel? Another thought would be the 373's but I don't think that would make that much difference. What do you guy's think?

Thanks for the help guy's

Gary

Re:Thinkin about changin rears

Gear swaps can get pricey - especially with 4x4's. Another option may be to bomb it a bit. Some extra TQ could certainly help. That way you could keep those tall gears in when running unloaded.

There are fella's on this site happily pulling 26k with 3.54's.

Talk to Haulin' in Dixie. He runs GCW around 30-33K. He has 3.54s and on a mostly STOCK truck. Ask him what he thinks about gears!

I pull with 3:54 gears....a 44ft enclosed and a 53ft enclosed car trailers with a rebuilt auto tranny and at times max out over weight 24-29000 lbs...the key is horsepower/torque will help overcome the taller gears you need more hp/torque to keep everything rolling on upgrades without lugging the motor and its ezer to get more horsepower then the cost of changing your rear gears...just my .02cents

Re:Thinkin about changin rears

Ok guy's talk to me. All I want is to keep the wheels turning without havein to shift everytime I come to an incline. Now remember I have a 92 Cummins. I have opened up the exhaust to 3 inches and cleaned up the kinks. She has a flowmaster muffler and a AFT air filter. I am carreying 354's with 33 inch tires. I don't want to hurt the truck but more power would be great!! I think I am puttin out about 160 hp stock with about 400 ft/lbs or torque. My fifth wheel weighs 11500 and the truck is about 6500 or so. It's a W350 SRW.

What will these tricks do to my milage? I get about 20 around town empty and 11 to 13 loaded with the fifth wheel.

Thanks for the help guys. I really need to put some spunk in the ole girl.

Gary

Re:Thinkin about changin rears

I had the 3.54's with an auto...pulled OK, but not fantastic..until a little tweaking was done. Then it was a whole new truck - totally awesome. You have a good base with the air filter and exhaust work - now for the real eye opener put in a fuel stop plate - or grind your stock one. Results are astounding !! Also you could follow with a turbo-master wastegate controller, I was pretty pleased with mine. Make sure you put gauges (pyrometer at least) on. I could create exhaust temps that were above the safe level with these mods - but it was no problem, just watch the gauge and back off a touch if your getting to hot. It only happend on steep hills with a big load. With your five speed you should be able to make your 3.54 gears work just fine.

misterKTM

Remember I have a 92 Cummins first gen. I don't think I can put in a fuel plate can I? The other problem is it's not electronic so I can put in a chip either. :'( I can't seem to find anyone local that can work on it to make the power I want. Don't mind doin it myself but little exp with diesels.

Gary

Re:Thinkin about changin rears

Oops missed the year - was just thinking 12 valve like mine was - I guess you can't put a fuel plate in :-[...but it looks like banks has several kits to up you're power - just have to do it with turbo and injector work I guess. There are several other companies that make power goodies as well - I just went with Banks - and was real pleased.

The pre 94's where a little harder to boost hp....you can change your turbo...tweak your pump for more fuel...and change your injectors

http://www.tstproducts.com/89-93_power_trial.htm

Re:Thinkin about changin rears

How much more power would you guess I would get? I was thinkin about changin rears to 410's but that ain't cheap to say the least. I also don't want to kill my milage. I guess I want the best of both worlds huh. Anyway I can't afford a new truck but I gotta do somethin. It's pretty bad.

Thanks

Gary

Re:Thinkin about changin rears

Hey thanks. Can the average shade tree machanic do this stuff? I have never replaced injectors or worked on the pump. Is there anything special to know about replaceing the injectors? Do ya figure this will make a big decline in my milage?

I guess with the pump and the injectors I should gain about 60 hp and maybe 110 or so torque. That should make a pretty big difference huh? Will it make much difference to change the turbo housing?

I am guessing you feel that best way for my condition is the the engine rather than the rears right? Don't know how much the rear change will cost but I figure I should be able to do the engine for about a thousand bucks. The rears will most likely be a bunch more.

Thanks again

Gary

Check the First Gen Site. Bushy has some very good info on the ve pumps. He would also be able to give you very good advice to get more out of your truck.
Tom
