Tailgate on or off

I am in the process of buying a 1999 Palomino overhead camper. It is for a 8' bed, but I am going to put it into my shortbed (6'-1/2). Is it better to leave the taigate on or take it off?
Thanks for the help.

I take mine off so I won't get rock chips and stuff in the paint.

Are you going to leave the camper on or take it off when not using?
IMO, it seems it would be better and safer to remove the taligate when loading or unloading the camper.

Creates a nasty bend seen more than one done. One just crinkled top because he had it down and turned and on the home built gooseneck trailer didn't clear.

We are probably only going to use it once a month a so, so I would rather just take it off.

If you look at my profile pics you will see the protective bars I put behind the tool chest. I figured that would be the ol slip off the clutch pedal point of impact! I also carry a spare adapter I made to release the B&W with as it tends to fall off and get ran over going down the road.... OOOPS
