Wildolman,

Just ignore this bunch. They do this every so often. 8) 8)

Come on you guys, this is a newby. Be good. Guide him to the pastures of wonder TC's, the delights of the toy box in which there are little wonder boxes that make the truck go AAARRRRRRR, the goodie bag of 275 injectors - - well, you know what I mean.

Arm chair and popcorn. Shame on you. ;D ;D
Hangs his head in shame :-[

Reaches for the popcorn ;D

Welcome to the site Wildoman! as you can see the maker of the best tranny is an undecided and at times volatile subject. Unfortunately the auto tranny is the weak link in these trucks. Treat it carefully, turn off the overdrive when it is going in and out like that on the hills and putting in a transmission temp guage can help. Also change the fluid and filter reguarly and adjust the bands as described in our wonderful growing FAQ section.
The main problem seems to come from the fact that Dodge took the old 727 tranny which was pretty much bullet proof, and then added the overdrive without increasing the fluid pressure and cooling ability. Also the stock Torque converters are just not up for all that torque these cummins engines have.

If it finally gives up the ghost you can try for the beefier set ups like ats or dtt tranny's.

I hope you find some of this information at least enlightening, altho I am sure you won't like it anymore than I did when I found out. Goodluck with your truck and take solice in the fact that your cummins has probably 500,000 miles in it before any major work and possibly a good deal more.
Re:Slushy
Wildolman, is the tranny tc maybe dropping out of lockup instead of o/d? TC unlocking would likely show a 125 - 200 rpm jump on level road running. The jump would probably be 400 or higher if you dropped from o/d luckup to 3rd unlocked while running 60-65.

TC unlocking is often caused by the throttle position sensor(TPS) on the 12 valve engines. I believe it is called an accelerator position sensor or something like that with the 24 valve engine. One of you over valved guys help me out.
Suggest you do a search on this topic. The info gained will be nice to have. If not used now... it will most likely be used later.

For tranny upgrades you should also include Dave Goerend of www.gbtransmissions.com (northeast Iowa) in the selection process. He provides a good product for the dollar.

Jerry

Wildolman, welcome to the best site around for CTD's. Tend to agree with the APPS (if you have the 24v) or TPS for those who are valve challenged
. Your problem is very similar to others over the past few months. Go to this site's search function and type in APPS or TPS depending on overvalved or undervalved (it's a site joke about 24v vs 12v RAMs). It's all there. Doing the APPS appears to be quite simple.
As to the popcorn and adult beverages. We have fun here. Tread lightly if somebody by the name of HOSS jumps up and starts pontificating. Ignore him, he's a ford guy who doesn't even own a diesel. I mean, if he owned a diesel, he might get some respect (What, HOSS and respect in the same paragraph?? Now they'll throw me off this site for sure :'( :'( :'( :'().
We're kinda like the neighborhood bar. Drop on by, have a few, chew the fat, try to solve the problems of the world. That kinda feeling to this site.
