Thanks Dennis
I did not know that this has been a on going problem with this tire.

I sent these pictures to my wife who recently deployed to Iraq of the tires on her truck. She was pretty upset, over the 4th of July weekend we pulled a friend of ours truck (2500 4x4 CTD White)on John_P trailer to John_P house for repairs. Last month we pulled the 5er up to Dover Del and also to Claremount Va, I am one lucky son of a gun that I did not have a tire blow out when pulling the 5er.

Admin ( Jack I think)
I agree these have been good tires up to recently. My best guess is that all that splitting of the side walls happened between May and July on this truck. As I stated earlier I rotate, wash and check over the wheels every oil change roughly 3000 miles the last one was in May in prep for our traveling.

The side walls look like they just seperate the belts break or what ever. The only thing holding in the air is whatever is on the inside of the tire. I say again there is no side wall when this happens. I found a tire on the right rear inside and right front and the one with the least amount of splitting on the left rear inside. I only see bad spots on the inside of the tires, the parts you can see easy all look good.

With all of the above said
If I had a truck with this tire on it I would either go get a new set of tires or start setting aside money for a new set and keep a very close eye on the insides of these tires until I could get rid of them.

I will say this for the tire. Normally I have found that Good/Year is just like the name claims, they are GOOD for a YEAR and then throw them away. These tires have performed well for 60 K miles, roughly 2 and 1/2 years.

I still have the tires in the back of my truck, I haven't been able to get to the local Good/Year store yet. I am going to try and get a new spare tire outa them. We'll see.

Thanks
See Ya
Chris

I read about those tires cracking on the sidewall in reviews at tirerack.com . I considered pulling them off my '04 but left them on . They were still on the truck with over 98,000 when the truck was traded in .

My dad had a set of goodyears on it when he bought it...They split, He got them replaced and they split again. 2 SETS in less than 20,000 miles....

We don't put goodyears on anything we own now....

Hello again
As Paul Harvy says here is the rest of the story.
I went to the local Good/Year store and they worked with me. I had already bought a set of Firestone Transforce AT LT 235/80R17 and was removing them to mount the new tires when I found the split side walls. We (tire store and I) worked it out with Good/Year that I will be getting a spare tire the same as the other 6 on the truck for $50.00. and they will get my mostly wore out Good Years in return.

I may not care for the tire but I must say they where easy to work with to get a fair settlement.

Just figured I would post and let you all know the outcome.

As I told the tire store fella it takes me all day to change the oil in this truck due to the pain in the but of removing the rear tires and cleaning them, he told me we did very well he has folks that come in for new tires on duallys every 20/25000 miles. I got just over 60 K out of these.

Hope this helps someone out there.
See Ya
Chris

I had the standard issue Wranglers on mine, starting cracking, but only minor.
Time is an issue, so when I upgarded, the tires were 5 years old.
I believe Goodyear has has issues with this, but normally they are good at working with you on new ones, especially if you email corporate.
I have the new Slient Armour, a whole new technologgy, whcih they claim, will be as good as Michelien, or better. Suppose to be excellent in all enviroments. 6k, no issues. Time will tell.
The list of things that are guraentted in life:
-Death(but maybe worse, more doctoer visits)
-Taxes(Also lieing politicians, or is that redundant?)
-Larger Hard drives & more memory
-Higher fuel costs
-Tire replacement & problems
Happy Motoring!!

Aren't those the ones with Kevlar in the tread and sidewalls?

Yes, Kevlar. Stronger(bullitproof?), run cooler. Also snow/mud rated. Fairly agressive tread. They have received very high marks from Consumer report & other sources. All their new tires are employing this new technology. A few people on the site have them, mostly pleased. If you look to buy them, use a company store and get competitive quotes from NTB, Discount etc.. The compamy store shold be able to beat them handily, but you have to make them work to get the best deal. End of month is best, monthly sales targets. It will b interesting to see how they do.

I bet they're not yet available in the larger sizes, though... wonder how the weight capacities will pan out.

Maybe I can talk one of the local guys on here with the SilentArmors to let me test the bullet-proof feature...

These tires started coming out a year ago in E rating. Good chance the larger sizes are available.
Good Luck finding a friend who will let you practice on his tires.
List on mine was $199, got them for around $145, a little under $1000 out the door, icluding hazard insurance, mounting, bal, etc.
The 235/85/16/17 should be readily available. I treid to get an allowance on my old tires, but did better just negotiating a price.

That's a great price! I've been shelling out $250 per corner for years with mine - usually about every 18 months...
