?'s on 4" turbo back exhaust for towing
?'s on 4" turbo back exhaust for towing
Trying to keep my EGT's down while towing my 13.5K Montana 5th wheel. If I installed a 4" turbo back exhaust (single pipe), looking for feedback on the following questions:
1. What kind of HP gain might I expect?
2. How much might my EGTs decrease (say up the grapevine w/13.5K)?
3. Aluminum or Stainless pros/cons?
4. Recommended Brands?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

you should already have 4" stock ...no power gain going from 3 to 4 you might see 50* lower egts if your going to go larger say 5". stainless is what I recommend and the DTR store has real good deals on new systems.
If your trying to lower EGTs might want to consider mater/ meth with just a little meth for the cooling affect. my .02

The exhaust is stock seems the tip is flared to a bit over 4 but the main pipe Outer Diameter is around 3.75ish maybe 3.5ID.
What I'm hearing is not much gain unless I go to 5" exhaust pipe
BUT
I could get more bang for the buck lowering EGTs by installing a water/meth injection kit?
--Are there any models that have a remote cab switch or do you install and always have a water/meth mix injection?
--If not, how long does a 5 gal resevoir last?
--Sounds like it may pay for itself in fuel in about 6 months?
Thoughts?....Brad

NO, it is programmable and you can turn it off . I burn about 4+ quarts going 1 way over the grapevine and It wont save you any fuel it will just lower EGTs,or it might not do anything in the way of cooling if you run a lot of meth.
Thanks.
For my needs (towing), sounds like water inject only would be best for EGTs and I would still get some HP boost. Sounds weird/too good to be true.
Is it worth the $700 if EGTs are my only concern OR should I just learn to let up with the right foot?

You might want to look at upgrading to the 04.5 turbo, I think you can find one of those for a reasonable price and the additional air flow would lower EGTs. I think there are quite a few threads abut this... BP.

Oh did I say I already did it with a Monster Muffler
You don't say what temps you are running or are woried about.I pull a 38 ft montana 3500 camper and truck on scale 22400 lbs.EGT's will depend on how much fuel you dial into it.I can hit 1400-1500 empty grabin gears with box on high.Normal highway driving with camper on I run about 800-1000.Pulling a hill I can see 1400-1500.I like to tow with about an extra 100 HP dialed into her.So if I see 1500 for very long I back out of the throtle or drop a gear.It sucks to still have plenty of power but you see the EGT guage in the red.But if you didn't have gauges you would probably just keep mashin and not even think about it and most likely every thing would be alright.I don't have a EGT gauge in my semi and I mat it to the floor on grades all the time and never give it a second thought but I would never push my pickup that hard.
the cali SO trucks "NON HO" didn't have 4 inch from the turbo back they had 3.5... You don't need 5" until you pass 450 HP other wise your losing your scavening effect. I would say go with a installer series 4" MBRP turbo back, you already have the Pac brake which replaced the stock 3.5 elbow on the back of the turbo. Your turbo will spool a lot better and you'll see a pretty good drop in Temps and Better fuel milage... You shouldn't pay $700 for a exhaust, being in Commiefornia you don't need stainless. Here is all you need:http://store.dieseltruckresource.com/mbal4tubaall1.html I've installed 3 of these systems on 2 second gen trucks and the 5" on my dually and we all love it. The Standard trucks "mine" and my buddies sound awesome, my father inlaws 01 automatic sounds good to, but theres something about the sound of these exhaust going through the gears!
