I need to register my new truck but am not sure what to do, The truck weighs 7960lbs and my trailer weighs 17,240 lbs for a total of 25,200 lbs. Do I tell the DMV I want to register the truck for 26,000 lbs

Your registering the "Truck" not the trailer. You don't need to tell the DMV what you will be towing with it.
Your truck was a GVW rating that is determined by the manufacturer , depending on the truck it will be somewhere from 10-13k lbs. That is the wieght that the DMV will register your truck at.

Different states have different processes. He needs to check with his local DMV. What they do in New York or Illinois have no bearing on Nevada. In most states the plate on the truck has to allow for the weight of the truck and trailer. But he has to find out about Nevada.

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but i have a Commercial registration vs. Non-Commercial Registration question that seems fitting for this thread.
The title for my truck is under my name, not a business name, the insurance is for it as a personal vehicle, the registration is Non-Comm. I found out that the registration is actually less expensive as Commercial than it is as Non-Comm. Would anything else be affected if i registered it with the DMV as Comm. instead of Non-Comm? Insurance, Title?

In wisconsin plates are based on gvw. You can check in your state by going to www.dmv.org and clicking on your state.

I checked the Nevada DMV website and they operate almost the same as NewYork State.
Your registation is based on the gross vehicle wieght, and not gross combined wieght with trailer.

Here in MO, the truck plates have to allow for the weight of the truck AND the trailer. I have mine plated for 18k. However, I see truck all over the place pulling 7k utility trailers with 6k plates. Seems like it is rarely enforced, but that can if they want to. I've never been very good with the dice, so I just plated my truck to allow for my trailer and load. Really didn't cost that much more to do it either.

I just called the NV. DMV and they said that the registration needs to include the truck and trailer weight, I can declare up to 26k, if you go over then it would require a commercial licence.
I have no idea how much that will cost me.
