I knew a fella with a 93 Powerstroke with a banks kit and he had his registered for 26,000#'s. I think he said it was like $180 or something a year. He had a farm and did some dozer work. I think he just walked in and got his. Have not tried that yet, but I feel with what I am doing I need to up mine as well.

I just went in to the DMV and told them I wanted a higher weight. Had to take the owners manual in to show them the truck was factory rated for 20,000 pounds gross though. Costs me about $191 in liscense per year too.

Mine is registered as an 11,000 lb truck and i had a Prof in college with an 02 6spd and his was registered at 16,000 lbs. If i didn't ask for 11,000 lb plates i think the standard in IN is 7,000 lbs. So just go to the DMV and ask them about it.

I just walked into the DMV and reregistered mine for the weight I needed to cover my truck plus trailer. In MO standard pickup plates are either 6000 or 12,000.... I registered mine for 18,000 which is a regular truck plate and falls under a slightly different set of rules than the basic passenger vehicle plates. Registration is only for 1 year instead of 2, there is a 60 day grace period for renewal of expired plates, and if you go beyond the 60 day grace period, there is no penalty when you do renew. Costs me about $66/year.

It may depend on your State. Here in Florida, my truck was decaled for 12,200, so DMV allowed me to tag it for that weight. On my new trailer, the manufacturer's cert. of origin (MCO) showed a WEIGHT on 6,900# - the DMV refused to allow me to tag it for the 20,000# decal GVW - I even provided a weight slip that showed the weight of the truck and trailer, to show them that @ 6,900# I could haul "nothing but air".

Since I am private, I said #$$%^&*^ ! I kept a copy of all of my documentation and attempts to throw money at the State - I can't force them to take it. The idiot at the DMV also said to tag the trailer higher I would need a "commercial insurance policy" - which of course is NOT true unless I was in business. Also, as an aside, in Florida with a truck considered "heavy" one is suppose to tag the TRUCK with the GCVW for both vehicles - DMV (even after I showed them this part of their own DMV manual) - ignored that.

So, when I move one of my vehicles around, I am "overweight" on my tags/tax, but well under my GCVWR. So be it ! Best of luck in your State - sounds like some have DMV employees that are a bit more intelligent.

Where in the manual do you find this information?

They wouldn't let me go any higher once I showed them the manual. I pull up to 26000 on occasion. Usually though, I'm right around 21000 with the R on the GN.

In Missouri you can do what ever you want. You can go in and tell them you want a 6,000lb plate for a one ton dually, or you can tell them you want an 80,000lb plate, makes no difference to them. We have all our trucks licensed with 18,000lb farm plates, but we regulary gross 40,000lb and sometimes a little heavier and never get so much as sneezed at. You don't have to prove anything, you just tell them whatever you want.

Customer: "Excuse me, I'd like to retag my scooter's weight..."
DMV Employee: "How much would you like?"
Customer: "80,000lbs"
DMV Employee: "No problem. Sign Here... Here... And that'll be $45"
Customer: "Thank You."

I to live in florida Daytona Area my 2500 and 3500 are reg at 25,999lbs going to 26,000lbs is about $85 more per year, alot of money for 1lb. I haul cars with my trucks and do stop at the scales. If your truck and trailer GVWR added together are over 26,000lbs you must have a class A CDL. I did not have any isues at the tag office.Per DOT you can do a stated weight on your reg if you exced 26000# you will then fall into the com. laws under 26001lbs there is no law to how much you can haul with your truck. My 3500 has 11,000lb gvw and my 3 car trailer has 14,800lb gvw for a 25,800 gcvwr. I cross the scales daily any where from 13,500 to 25,500. I have went over a few times it can get costly. Thats the thing it is all about the taxes paid that make you legal or not...

In Ky, both of my trucks have farm tags. I know it makes a difference, but the registration on both reads 38,000 lbs. It may be a mistake on their part, I don't know, but that's what the paper states. For that, I just said to put farm registration on them.

Originally, I just walked in and put commercial tags on the 89. The lady just asked me what I wanted it plated for.

Sure seems strange that there is so big a difference amound the different states.
