Receiver Hitch on RV
Receiver Hitch on RV
I know others have done it as I have seen 5ers with a boat or other trailer in tow.
I am wanting to add a reciever hitch to my 5er and there are no after market hitches that I can find that will bolt up as the frame is too wide. The frame is I beam and is about 71 inches outside edge to outside edge. I am looking at getting a couple of 72 inch pieces of 4 inch C channel and notching them to weld in a receiver tube and then attach all this to the 5er. The 4 inch bumper is almost useless for wieght carrying and I need a WC rating of 500 lbs.
Suggestions or ideas welcome.

The place I bought my 5er from puts them on all the time, it's a receiver hitch with square tubes that slide over the existing cross bar on each end that they weld to the inside of the frames. I would check with a couple off RV dealers in your area.

I see that you are from Washington, like I am. You might want to check on the legalities of towing a trailer behind a 5th wheel behind a truck.
I talked to a State Patrol officer at the Bow Hill scale house and also someone in Olympia about that very thing, and I was told it was illegal to tow that kind of set up in Washington.
When asked which RCW someone would get written up against, they could not really give me an answer except to point to one that, in my mind dealt more with commercial rigs then with RV's.
I am not saying that it can not be done, because I have seen setups like that in WA, even in the Seattle area. I don't know how they got away with it, if they did. With all the truck drivers I work with, I couldn't find anyone who was willing to be a guinea pig and test the system.
Just an FYI.

DMH, thanks for the info, maybe I should have stated it is to put a generator on the rear of the 5er. I personnally don't like the idea of towing a train like I have seen my BIL do. He pulls a fiver and a boat in ND. I know that some states allow it and some don't, some that do allow it require a "dolly" to support the tongue of the last trailer so the hitch is just a connection point.
My old man has a 30' 5er that he pulls a 21' boat behind, with his quad cab 12v in front, needless to say it's a train
but anyway he replaced the flimsy stock bumper with a piece of 1/4" x 6" square tubing and then welded a reciever into it. It's real stout, and affordable ...wish I had some pics.
