Receiver hit ID question

Truck in sig, when I bought it, it had a receiver hitch on it. There aren't any ID marks as far as Class 3,4, etc... I'm in the market for a TT and want to make sure it's sufficient. Is there any other way to tell the Class without being able to read the sticker? Thanks in advance.

I sure it is the class 4 or whichever they all have unless the previous owner did something strange. Can you get us a pic so we can conferm this.

I bet you it is a Class III. Mine has a hitch that was factory installed along with the towing package from dodge and it is a Class III hitch for a 2001 truck. 5000lbs towing / 500lbs tongue weight

My '01.5 3500 dually had factory hitch on it that was only good for #7000 without a WD hitch. My sister's '01 1500 had the EXACT same hitch on it. Pretty sad......

mine had a 5,000lbs max hitch on it from the factory.
Service manager told me I would void my warantee if I pulled more than that and used od!!!!!! Then he went on to say the trans was the same as a dakota, because they swap them all the time!!!! I said it won't even bolt up to the cummins. He hung his head and walked away!!!

Hey Rebel

A Class III is good for 10000lbs and 1000 lbs tongue weight with a WD hitch.

Sorry, was away from the computer for a couple days. I'll try to get a pic this weekend and get it on here. What's the easiest way to post a pic?

Forget the class numbers. There is no industry standard. A look at the various manufacturer web sites will confirm that. My stock receiver was rated to 500lbs tongue wt/5000 trailer weight without a weight distribution hitch, 1000/10,000 with. If your is the original it is probably the same. When it failed I had overloaded the tongue wt enough for the metal in the mounts to tear. I now have one rated for 15,000 from a trailer parts dealer. It has a 2 inch receiver, so for all of you that think that receiver class numbers mean something............is it a IV or V?

After looking at sites, trying to get an idea so when I looked at it, you're right. I've pulled up to 7k with no troubles. I was just making sure when I went to a TT if I had enough, but that will have a weight dist. hitch, for sure. I'll investigate it a little farther, but I bet I'm going to be ok to 10k. If I go bigger than that, I'll go with a GN or 5ver.
