I'm looking at a couple of 4.5 to 5 ton trailers to haul my trail rig on, and I have a question concerning experience with axle/wheel type.<br><br>One has an eight lug 16 inch wheel; the other looks to be a 14 inch wheel (from what I remember) and has the 5 &quot;dog&quot; attachment (similar to mobile homes). I've owned both, and currently have the 8 lug rim which I prefer over the &quot;mobile home&quot; type. Also, my trailer rims are 16.5's, you need to look again. I wish they were 16's, it would make finding a spare easier. The weight rating also includes the weight of the trailer, so a 5 ton is only good for approximately 4 tons of payload. Hope this helps.

You always get stuck with cruddy nylon tires for high load ratings on those 14&quot; mobile home rims. I'd go with the 8 lug rims for the tire options alone.<br><br>Good luck.

I prefer the eight lug 16 inch tire. Got them on my Gn and the dump trailer now. Had those mobile home axles on my other trailer. They work fine but tires are not cheap at all. Can be a pain to get aligned once you change the tire also.

Also remember that 14.5 tires for house trailers are not legal on any other use. They are illegal to use on the trailer you would be using. They do make replacements but they are expensive.

Wow. This is some good info guys. I was kind of leaning toward the trailer with the 16&quot;, 8 lug rims. It is around a 16 footer that you'd usually see pulling a bobcat or other compact piece of equipment. The deck is real low to the ground (my 3 yr old can step up on it). My trail rig is over 7 foot tall :, so a low deck height would be nice bonus. It is a fairly short truck that should fit pretty well on a 16 footer.<br><br>I do have a concern about how well I can position the load on such a short trailer. I probably have about 75% of the truck's weight in the front (thank a 1000lb of diesel for that). Other front heavy trucks I've owned, I've had to load them backwards to get a short trailer loaded correctly (avoiding excessive tongue weight).<br><br>Keep the comments coming.

That is a little bit of a hike but not bad. I'm in Apex. I'm not in a huge hurry as my little boy is not quite ready to hit the trails all day. Probably could do 2 to 3 hours at the most. I'd like to get an idea of what type and size I really need. Cost is obviously a factor.<br><br>Where are they relative to Lexington?<br><br>

To complete the train of thought...the truck is green too. Yes it stands for &quot;Kermit the Mog&quot;. It is a Unimog specifically a model 406.120 or shortwheel base diesel cabrio. The engine is similar displacement to the CTD but without the turbo. Mine is running around 80 to 90 hp out of 5.7L. It has a few other tricks that make it a fairly stout off-road/work truck.

Also, I checked out the link. Love to come, but my 4x4 club has a recovery day that weekend. I'll have to catchup at another time.

COOL! ;D<br> I've always liked those trucks. They look like they would go just about anywhere. I've got a CJ-5 that I've been thinking about doing some work on to turn it into a trail rig. It's really not that great of a street vehicle and certainly wasn't meant for running down the interstate. Right now it is all stock with just 33x12.50's on it. That little 258 six and not much weight lets it go places where ya can't go with most full sized 4x4's. It does need a suspension upgrade to give it a little more clearance though. <br> Maybe some time in the future, I'll find enough money to spread out on all the toys. : <br><br>Now you guys can get back to trailer talk!

I don't think you'll find better prices anywhere. I paid $1495 for a 7000# car hauler with ramps, 1 brake axle and 1 non, and a breakaway kit. full diamond plate deck. and 4 D rings

My Mog will weigh in somwhere around 8500 lb +/- 200 lb once a rear counter weight is installed (so it won't do a nose stand on a steep descent). I think a 12k GVWR rated trailer will get me where I need to be with a bit extra.<br><br>Club-wise I belong to CNC 4x4 (www.4x4.org). They haven't updated the club members area in awhile, so my trail rig is listed as my softtop Pinzgauer (two trucks ago).

If you ever get to the east side of Raleigh out 64 in Knightdale there is Earvin Rigsbee Trailer Sales and also SouthAg a little farther east that carries trailers. Earvin carries P&amp;J trailers and has good pricing on them. I have dealt with him for years and always recommend people at least look there when looking. Several people I know have bought from him and he apparently has the best prices in the area.
