Need advice with Slider Hitch for new 5ther
Need advice with Slider Hitch for new 5ther
I just purchased a new 04 Keystone Laredo 29BH 5th wheel.
Dry weight is 7800lbs, pin weight approx 1400lbs, 30ft long.
My question is in regards to 5th wheel hitches. I managed to
get them to throw in the hitch too. The hitch they say they
will install is a Husky slider 16K and I already told them about
the u-bolts or brackets they will need to order so they don't
drill holes thru the hydroformed frame.
I'm looking for advice on hitches and if you think I'll have any
problems towing this baby (dont think I will, but would love
feedback from people towing with the new 03 2500 Ram
with the HOCTD and the RE48 trans) I have a brake controller
and have already pulled our current 30 TT Ultralite..(5000lbs
dry weight)...pulled like a dream up the mountains of Colorado.
I dont pick up the 5ther until later next week, so there is time
to make changes in the hitch selection if needed.
My tow vehicle is fully described below (2100 miles so far)
Thx, 03CTDCO

Re:Need advice with Slider Hitch for new 5ther
I have a Husky 15k and I really like it, I had second thoughts about that hitch but after reading other fourms on some of the RV sites, I feel better about mine.. I wish my dealer had put the 16k slider in mine, I just got the 15k, but it came with the trailer.. It's a 03 Dutchman Classic, 27' rear living. My old 93 D350 pulls it good..
Re:Need advice with Slider Hitch for new 5ther
If you want the best hitch out there then get the SuperGlide. Yes it is a little spendy but well worth the extra bucks if you ever get in a situation. It's automatic so you don't have to remember to set it and then reset it when done. The first time you don't you will regret it big time :'( :'(

Well I can't comment about towing it with the auto but I have a 03 29BH and the biggest problem I have had in the mountains is slowing down for the curves ;D . The thing just pulls great. Not sure about the husky 16. I have a 16k draw-tite with a slider. Don't need the slider now, needed it when we were pulling with the Ford. Only had 1 bad incident with it. Hit a big bump in the road at speed and it unlocked and slid back. Wasn't too bad but I haven't been able to get the wife to drive it again since. Oh well.
Anyway, hope you like your laredo. We love ours.

Re:Need advice with Slider Hitch for new 5ther
We have a Husky 16K slider in 2003 short box 1 ton Dodge. RV dealer installed hitch drilling the frame for the brackets as per Husky instructions. It was included in the price of our new 5th wheel. The double rocker is a nice feature. The slide work,s okay when I tried it out. Our 5th wheel has an extended pin. Dealer told me that I wouldn't need the slider but I paid the $150.00 extra just to have it in case it was needed. Might call it extra insurance. So far I haven,t had to slide the hitch when pulling the 5th. In my book, it is a good designed hitch and the price is right.
