Morryde vs TrailAir Pin Box-5th wheel

Smile Morryde vs TrailAir Pin Box-5th wheel

I pull a 35 foot Jayco 5th wheel with a 2003 6spd Dually. Depending on the road, I get a lot of jerking/bucking between truck and trailer at times. And especially when starting off- when changing gears. I have a standard 15k "rigid" Valley brand 5th wheel hitch.

I'm now looking into the Morryde Rubber Pin Box and the TrailAir Air Pin Box. The TrailAir pin box looks to have a better design to me, but it is more $$. And the Morryde looks like it would work well too. Has anybody out there had any real world experience with either of these? If so, would you buy it again? Also, where is the cheapest place to buy?

In reviewing these, the air ride pin boxes appear to give vertical cushioning, but are little help in the fore-and-aft horizontal "chucking". The MorRyde design, on the other hand, has more freedom in the fore and aft direction, but offers little vertical cushioning. I guess the moral is that we 5th wheel pullers need to understand the problem before we select a solution.

I drove a unit with the air hitch. It does give some fore/aft help in reducing the chucking. I have two problems with it - - one, it is an air bag with all the inherent care, air pressure, and problems associated with them. The second was in the handling - - it gave me the feeling the fiver had a loose connection to the truck. It moved too easily in the hitch giving a very uneasy feeling in driving the truck. The rubber pin is tight enough to still give a firm connection feeling, but it is a cushioned firmness - - shock mounted as it were.

You can also still use a kingpin stabilizer with the MORryde unit. I have heard guys complain that they can't use theirs with the air pin. I think I would be more prone to go with the air hitch if I wanted to do anything with air. OOOPPPSSS, forgot, I would have the joy of messing with and replacing four air bags rather than one. Oh mercy.

I have the advanced air ride hitch and its got fore and aft looked after real well. It pretty much eliminated the rubber band effect. It is fully articulating and depending on your pin weight, you will have to adjust your air pressure to suit the weight. I was running with nearly 3,000 lbs pin weight one way and on the way back I was just under 1900. I had to let the bags down a bit. I think I will get in cab adjustment for that with my trucks air bags. Bob loves air bags.
Also, I used it in -35C temperatures and it worked awesome. No leaky air bags.
I did not get that feeling that something was loose. However, I know what Bob is decribing, I felt that in a truck I was a passenger in one time. I told the driver something is not right.

He looked at me puzzled. We pulled over and the rear rails of his reese hitch had bolts in the holes but no nuts on them!!! the hitch was lifting and floating. I am so glad I said something. Imagine a corner and a bump with 20K plus hooked on.

Please re-read my post. I said air ride pin boxes generally aren't much help with fore-and-aft chucking as compared to the MorRyde pin box that has its greatest design degree of freedom in the fore-and-aft direction. Air ride hitches are another matter. OK?

I caught that. That is what I drove - - air pin box. It gave me too much fore aft - - very sloppy that gave an uneasy feeling when driving it. I had heard the same thing you said, better on the ups and downs of life, not the fore aft - - my experience was it was too sloppy fore aft. Interesting. I don't think we will ever eliminate entirely some action fore aft, but the MORryde box has certainly cushioned that effect dramatically without the sloppiness. I think the up and down needs to be addressed with good truck suspension, leveling and pin weight. My comment about the air hitch was I would rather have the air hitch than the air pin if I had to chose one or the other. I rode in a rig with air hitch and the chucking was greatly reduced in that. Lot's of difference in price, though. And, you now get to mess with 4 air bags rather than 1 - - how lovely. Did I ever mention I love air bags?

Scotty, I think you should mount a 3 hp air compressor in the bed of your truck, run it on a big inverter, mount a gauge for each air bag on the dash, install air lines all over the truck so you can individually adjust the air in each bag - - then have a little jet on the sun visor to wisp little gasps of fresh air on your face whilst you drive your big bad Cummins over the plains of Canada. Wow, what a setup that would be. I like it. Oh mercy, don't we have fun? Boys and their toys. My wife gives me that "I thought I only had two boys - - where did this one come from?" look all the time. Hey, life is short - - enjoy it but be ready for the inevitable.

I was only pointing out a different approach...with air. Not the hot air we get from Bob in Florida though. Cool crisp arctic air.

Bob Bob Bob, I am thinking about a 'gyro' to control the four corners of the truck. It may work on the air ride hitch too. Its easier to have a display screen that has multi functions as follows:

Watching DVD's
Navigation
Monitoring gauges for pyro, boost, fuel pressure, rear diff temp, ambient outside temp, air pressures
etc etc.

Better then the old multi fill the cab and dash with analog gauge look from the 70's.

Although I really enjoyed the 70's.

I agree with your mods. I think you need a huge computer under the rear seat storage controlling everything. Then you could ride in the fiver and wake up when it honks and says you are at the destination. Hey, HHMMM, that sounds cool, Bob. Let's see - - I would need a 531w inverter, cushioning for the hard drive, I could run the wires under the . . . . HMMMMM. Hey, gotta run - - got stuff I need to buy. YEH
