Mack Class 8 for towing
Mack Class 8 for towing
Anyone know much about them?
MACK helped sponsor the strongman comp I put on and I am looking at what one of these would be like for towing a large RV.
By the time I get a new truck and do all that I want to do to it and keep it for at least five years, I will be into it for at least 75K. Custom tow bed, tires/wheels, the whole enchilada. Plus I would still be over its limit with a LARGE 5th wheel.
I was quoted 80K for a new Mack 10 spd with air ride, air seats, brake, AC etc etc. Only drawback right now is the two seats in the cab...would want to make that a sleeper or walk in for more room and passengers.
That was their retail price and it would change depending on options and what their cost is.

I'm not familiar with the Mack, but Frieghtliner has a "Sport" series that is 4 doors, pure luxury inside, and setup for towing 5th wheels. New they go for around $110k but you can find them used with low mileage for about 1/2 that. I've talked to several people at the RV parks and they say there is NO comparison between towing (and especially stopping) with them versus a pickup.
If you can afford it go for it. It will have to be registered as a RV but that should not be a problem. That price was for a day cab from what I gather. You could probably get one fr around $72 to 75,000 if you talk right to the salesman. Why not look into a used sleeper truck? You can get a nice used one with sleeper for that price. And remeber, even though its used it Mack has a standard 5year 500,000mile warranty on their major engine components and if you get an eaton trans it may have a good warranty if it has synthetic oil in it. Any remaining warranty is transferable also.
OR you could save a BUNCH of money (about 1/2) and buy a used Class 8 and cut the rear axle off - take a look at this guy's site - I heard at one time he had a 2 year backlog, but he does sell the plans on how to do this yourself, or at least have someone do it for you.

Heck - these trucks are probably good for 800K miles, and most of them come off lease with 500k or so... You'd have to do a LOT of RVing for 300K miles, and even then I'd have to imagine that even with an overhaul it'd still be cheaper than a new one...

We have 2, CH613 Mack trucks. They're pretty good trucks, but like the KW MUCH better. More room, easier to work on and more engine options. Unless you order a new one built to your specs, it is VERY hard to find a Mack truck without a Mack engine. Personally, I'd get a used truck that doesn't have the EGR and other emissions crap. Really kill performance.
I don't much care for a 10spd trans. Prefer the 13spd Road Rangers.

I have known the owner of the Mack Truck dealership for longer then I really knew. He was a neighbor of mine a few years back and neither one of us ever talked about what we do. LOL
I know they have some used demo rigs as well as some early buy backs. The plan is to go talk about whats around that is used. When I figured out my costs of what I want to do to the next truck...whenever a Mega Cab long bed comes out...I am going to be running close to what the new day cab is...at full retail.
Getting a good used one and doing what I want to do with it makes a whole lot more sense. I would still run a Ram but use the big truck for the REAL towing.
I have a friend here that does awesome interior work as well as a great painter if that is needed. Another wants to build the tow deck for whatever truck I get.
I have the air brake endorsement and checked on registering as an RV...no problemo.
Thanks for the feedback.
