Jacobs E Brake

Figured I would try this post in a few different places...........

I just insatlled a Jacobs E Brake on my 97 3500, and i am not sure it is working to its potiential, I tow an 8000# trailer and in 4th or 5th gear down a grade it wont hold or slow the truck, I still get some acceleration. My other question is where does all the exhaust escape from? When I activate the brake it makes a relativeley loud hissing noise -- is this the wat it should sound and act? I bought this from a friend who never used it, so I have no idea of what to expect out of this thing.

Your exhaust brake will only make a hissing noise as it is retaining the exiting gasses from the engine. As you gear down it will have more holding power depending on grade, weight, speed and RPM. The highest amount of holding power with any load will be in 1st gear at 2800 rpm vs lowest at 1300 RPM in 5th overdrive. These units are designed to assist service brakes not replace them. Driving experience with a load will govern the best safe speeds not to overheat brakes on various grades. PK

Thanks PK -- you have helped confirm my assumptions, I was just unclear on what to expect out of the unit, and how much it would actually slow me down loaded on a grade.
