I want to say "Thanks"
This is our third year for owning a trailer and we rarely pull farther than 150 miles.
This trips we decided to travel further than ever before. My wife and I traveled from St. Louis Mo. to Sandusky Ohio via Chicago to have a "slide topper" installed on our trailer. We left Sandusdy after Cedar Point and ended up at Niagra Falls. We drove straight home to come back to work. We put around 2000 miles on my old CTD and it ran like a champ.
Since I have been reading this site I have learned so much about my CTD I love it even more. My EGT's were always in check, and my fuel pressure always stayed above 12 psi. Regarding my mpg, I wish it could have been better, but....
I averaged about 12.8 mpg towing. I did not think it was bad due to the fact most towing was done around 72 mph. When we slowed to 65 the mpg jumped up another gallon atleast but we were always running late.
Again, I just want to say thanks for all the information and it carried us through a wonderful vacation.

Good Deal,,,
When you say "slide topper",,,,,, are you talking about the little awnings that roll in and out automatically when you put the slide out and they keep the twigs and junk from sitting on top of your slide-out? If so,,,,,,, I would think those are very handy items. After staying in a wooded camping spot for a week or so, I always have to climb the roof ladder and sweep the slides off before retracting them into the rig. I'm going to look into getting them for both the slides on our 5er.
Glad you had a good trip!

Towing with the gas engines just seems like more work. Sounds funny, but the "fatigue" factor is much less. The hills are easier, you're getting passed less ... maybe thats part of it.

Rattlin Ram, yes that is what I meant by a slide topper. We have wanted one for over a year, and I am already happy with it on one trip. Worth the money IMO.
Forrest, It amazes me how quickly I have become used to getting 17.5-19.0 mpg unloaded. My old gasser got 13mpg one time. I have to agree with you about the fatigue factor. I just love hitting some hills and listening to the exhaust. I normally left one window open. Funny it was always the rear passenger vent window.
