i think i killed my trailer

i've been moving the past week and hauling all my junk over to the new place. well, heading to pick up a load and i noticed one of my trailer tires wobbling like a drunk politician. so, low and behold, it looks like the outer bearing went tango uniform. the problem is, it scored the underside of the spindle towards where the inside bearing goes. i'm sure i know the answer to this, but, just sticking new bearings in there wont cut it, right? its gonna have to be a new axle?

anyone have any ideas of where to pick up an axle or two for fairly cheap? pricing them on trailerpart.com, it looks like more than i can really drop right now, post move and all that.

the saving grace is, at least the stuf is 95% moved before it happened.

It may be repairable at a local axle shop by just cutting that end of the tube off and putting on a new spindle. Not sure on that cost, it may be cheaper to go with a whole new axle..??

See if you can find an "Auto Safety House" in your nearest town/city. A truck store may also be able to supply one.

Here, Auto Safety House have 3500lb axles for ~$130. That's what we used to replace the axle under my bro's boat trailer.

Happened to my SIL's trailer a few years ago. Went to Northern Tools and picked one up....don't remember the price, but it was reasonable for a complete axle.

How "scored" is the underside of the spindle?

If it is just scuffed up and hasn't changed shape in a way that effects how it contacts the inner races of the bearings, maybe it could be dressed up?

On the other hand, if it is really chewed up, a good trailer shop should be able to weld on a new spindle and keep things aligned properly.

Whats size of axle are we talking here? Check in the phone book under machine shops and look for someone who is set up to Flame Spray they build it up and machine it down to factory specs.. most HD mechanic shops would know of the people set up to do it.

The other thing to remember is, if the bearing is pooched that hub/ spindle has likely been VERY hot. I've seen the inner races actually welded to the spindle.

The heat created from the bearing running dry and/or failing can cause that spindle to loose the temper that has been hardened into that steel which can allow that spindle to bend or break. Not something you want to have happen.
If the spindle is scored than the inner bearing race has obviously grabbed and spun on that spindle.

As allready mentioned spinndle or axle replacement might be the best option.

I had 6,000# axles custom made for approximately $160 this spring, I would think that is money well spent.

I would look into that.

Local axle and spring shop that builds axles.

I just bought the tubes and swapped my brake and hub assemblys over.
