So, did you ever find out if your buddies Ford had 4.10 gears? Is he running stock tires? What year Ford was it?

Buddies ford

OK I called him and asked him what gears he was running. He is not sure but he is turning 2300 rpms at 65, I am guessing he is running 4.10s.

It's funny. I have a friend and a brother in law, both with ford F-350's.
both 7.3 power strokes, very nice trucks. Both can beat me in a drag
race. But when we go camping with our travel trailers , I out pull them
both up in the hills. All trucks have mild mods. like mine. They are both
wanting to trade in thier trucks because they are aproaching 200,000
miles. I will just be broken in at that point.

Yeah, that's probably it. Your truck is still pretty good if it can pull that trailer going 60 mph up a steep hill. If you had 4.10's and stock tires, you would spank the Ford...

I thought the original post said you were pulling 8000lbs?

Never said I had 20000 pounds on a trailer. I said I weighed around 20000 gross, as in total combined weight of truck and trailer. If ya want I can send ya the phone number if the other 5 people that where in the truck with me. I wanted to make sure I was remembering corectly because at the time I was more concerned abought RPMs and EGTs, so the other day I went out and ran it up to the 2700+- PRMs that I climbed the grade in fifth gear and it was 73MPH. Most of the guys and my wife that where with me would probobly be gald to let me give ya there number so ya can call and ask if I am full of crap. The weight was via a local Co-Op elevator scale the day before we left. If ya look in my gallery you will se a pic of my truck with 2 ATVs on the back and a camper behind it. That weighed around 16000#gross. We did the first trip out at around 19-20K in June then again in August with the 16k. Both times I never droped below the speed limit unless trafic forced me to. If I could keep it above 70 mph it would stay there, if it dropped below 60-65 I could not get it back up to those speeds. A few times in August with the camper, trafic would stop in the middle of the grade and the most I could get out of it from a dead stop on the grade was 50mph till it leveled off. If ya realy want to you can chase me up the hill this August again. I will be going threw on August 12th. I should be real close to the same weight as last June. There will be 5 of us in the cab and I will be pulling a 20 foot goseneck horse trailer with 4 or 5 ATVs in it and anouther trailer behind that one with 3 more ATVs on it. We should be going threw Denver around 3 in the afternoon.

this truck

APACHE: words well spoken. Myself I have operated 49 diesel engines and 19 gas engines to date. I started with a 1970 Ford 3000 Super Dexta farm tractor have run this to Super B chip truck.

Have you had the t-stat changed? Does your engine idle smoothly? Have you stock HP ratings. One gent said 150 rwhp. Sorry no my 93 160hp gave me 155 rwhp. With the L/P working mine gave me a whole 175 rwhp this is way low. A 235 should be around 220 or so is my guess for they are supposed to be 2/3 % more efficient.

I've been to several diesel dyno meets and a stock 99 will be around 150 at the rear wheels and your 93 would be less!

If I could keep it above 70 mph it would stay there, if it dropped below 60-65 I could not get it back up to those speeds. I'm sure anyone could run the ****out of their truck and go way too fast. You admit that if you drive the speed limit up the mountain it is hard to hold speed!

The point is AC427 truck is performing good, he just needs to address the overheating problem.

I have 235/85/16 tires and 3.55 gears and usually pull that grade in 3-4 with my stick or 2-3 in the auto, have to keep the rpms up. So with his 255tires the performance seems about right. The overheating is a bad fan clutch if he can't hear it kick on or clogged radiator as mentioned.
I tow up and over I-70 west of Denver all the time, with the rig in sig.
18,700 overall weight, 11'6" tall truck camper, can do it at 60 mpg in 5th gear right at 1250* on pyro. Could do it faster in 6th gear, but then the pyro goes thru the roof.

Oh yeah, my crankcase vent has been 'hosed' , so my engine temps on this climb never get a needle thickness worth above normal.

The top two runs were bone stock (198.8 & 197.9hp) The last two were with a borrowed VA box. I guess I must have got a good one.
I do tend to agree that he needs to solve the overheating problem first.

Generally, BONE STOCK, will do about 170rwhp, and with a COMP about 330rwhp.

I don't know what mine did stock.. My first dyno was 456rwhp, then two motors later, 516rwhp, then decided for some bottle, and did 588rwhp. hehe..

Well first things first when was the last time you changed the fuel fiter? And further more if your pickup pump is weak you will really lose power, check then both and I am sure the Ford will see only teh back of you. Your hot hot temp tells me you are starving for fuel. Buy a Duramax and you will really be sad.
