Cool I guess this is normal?

I guess that I must still be learning just what my truck is capeable of.

My bud called at 9:30 this morning and asked if I could tow a tractor up the hill for him. Apparently the rental shop would not let him tow it with his Avalanche as it was not 3/4 ton or better.

I was thinking that I was really in for it , but when I arrived to pick up the "tractor" I found that it was a John Deere skid steer similar to a Bobcat in size. I figured big deal rolling my eyes again, the tractor was on a 15-20' trailer, big deal again.

I kicked the trans into tow/haul and started out the drive of the rental shop testing the surge brakes at the nearest stop sign and then I hit the road. Up the hill to my buds place about 30 miles from the rental site.

I returned 4 hours later picked up the tractor trailer and returned to the rental site. Where I promptly asked them ,"how much does this rig weigh?"
They in formed me ," Right at 11k lbs"

I had no problems whatsoever plenty of juice/brakes and no box used.

Is this normal? My jaw is still on the ground!

Welcome to the world of the almighty Cummins.

Mine still amazes me to this day when I have weighed some of the loads I have pulled.

My SO pulls 12,000 easily with my quad box on the 60 hp setting. I am still amazed that it's so easy but that's why I got the Cummins......

At over 20K I can keep the cruise at 65 mph anywhere I have gone. This truck is amazing!

compared to what we had to tow with years back '60s/'70s they are amazing. I tow a 11200 lb 5er that is 12 ft tall and a very flat front profile. Towing roads in OK/KS/TX against 35-40 mph head winds used to bog the old 454/460s and the older diesels to 40-45 mph tops at 5 to 7 mpg. This thing has always got 11.5 to 13.5 towing heavier loads on the same roads and conditions. Even in the Rockies it seems to run even better at 7000+ feet than at 700 ft around here. The Cummins is AMAZING....JIM

11K that's all. That doesn't even make them begin to work.

Eldorado grade out of Sacramento on I 50 east is probably 1/2 mile long and reaches 300'+- from the bottom. I was at 2/3 throttle keeping it at 60mph and it never kicked out of over drive in the tow haul mode. The second grade past Eldorado grade is 1 mile long and adds approximately 300'+- to that.

As I said there was no challenge with either.

Last night we hauled a 4x4 Durango,4x4 Expedition, and a E350 hight-top extended van that had the Powerjoke in. Don't tell anyone but I think we where a LITTLE OVER I don't know what it weighted, but I am guessing we close to 30,000lbs truck and Trailer. Not to bad for a 91 12v non-IC and a GM overdrive trans.

Ahh yes

welcome to the world of low end torque... you will find it quite addicting... I have towed 20K myself before, other than suspension sitting lower, no issues, the engine was workin, but not breakin a sweat.. oh and this was up hills too..

I was dragging two trailers loaded with strongman gear...I calculated the weight of the gear and estimated the weight of the two trailers and added up to be just under 26,000 pounds.

Just for the heck of it and to get out and stretch I pulled into the scales [they were closed] and was shocked when I added it up.

15,200 KILOGRAMS...whoops.

So there I am in the middle of nowhere, middle of the night wondering if I should keep going. If I had dropped the trailer I would've said goodbye to it so I kept going. I held 120 KMH easily...I did take a hit in the mileage department...9.3 average. LOL

I later learned that the small trailer...18ft speedloader was heavier then guessed because it had two 7K axles and 16" rubber, not 3500 pound axles and 15" rubber. The big trailer is a 25ft beaver tail with dual tandem 10K axles with a 12" I-beam frame on each side [obviously DOH!]...and an 8' x 8' deck on top...now I know where the extra weight was compared to the base model weights.

Pulled it real easy.

Scotty

Another thing that's really helping you guys are those 4.10 gears. I wish I had 4.10 in my beast, these 3.55 are not the best when you got some weight behind you.

I can't wait to get my new (to me) trailer road-ready and to haul my Jeep around. Even if it isn't a "real load", I'm still excited. I know how good this thing pulls with 1000lbs in the bed (um... didn't notice it?!) so with a 6000lb load back there I'm looking forward to feeling the power
