how many have a second air tranny cooler installed?
how many have a second air tranny cooler installed?
Hi everyone,
I am planning on pulling a 5-6000 lb 5th wheel with my 2WD dodge cummins. I have been looking at adding an additional tranny cooler after the factory cooler up front.
Is an additonal cooler required? or does the factory one perform OK? I don't want to fry a tranny
due to to high a temp.
what kind of temps can I expect with the factory cooler? I live just west of the rocky mountains and will most likely be towing through them at times.
thanks
Brian

To me that kind of load is an empty trailer....the cooler works petty good.....y dont you install a tranny temp gauge first to see what kind of temps your running at.....be sure to put the temp sensor in the out line at the point of the hottest fluid temps
I agree with pappy, that's a pretty light load for the Cummins. And the passes in your neck of the woods are not nosebleeders like Colorado. I towed 8k regularly in the Colorado Rockies with an 01 1/2 ton gasser using the stock tranny cooler. Never had a problem. I just didn't let the tranny hunt when pulling and I changed the fluid more often.
Brian, you should at least have a temp gauge, but the second cooler would not hurt either. All my auto's have the second cooler as a 18,000#, and some of those trucks the fluid would hit 195*.

I'm putting in a tranny temp gauge on the oulet line to the firdt coolant/tranny exchanger. I am also going to install a pressure sender in the same line to monitor TC lockup psi. I'm also putting another sender to monitor tranny line pressure.
I will pass on the cooler and see how it does.
thanks everyone

You know, I agree with everyone else, pulling a 5-6k trailer is like going around empty, that is unless it's BIG
Like a barn door BIG
I pulled a 21ft TT accross the country in the summer, it stood about 12' tall and had know problem pulling it running at highway speeds with the cruise set and AC kicking, all stock except for fliuds.
Don't worry about it, just Drive it Like You Stole It
