Re:Heavy Haul Report

I would run the rpm to 3000 when coming up through the gear to get to speed. But once to speed in 6th it is based on the speed. Around 2000 at 60 mph.

Where do you have you probe at? pretty big difference in temps.

Re:Heavy Haul Report

Yeah, big difference in temps...pretty strange. My probe is pre-turbo, in the front portion of the exhaust manifold. I too run up to 3000ish going through the gears, then cruise at about 2000 rpm (67-68 mph). I was traveling through the columbia river gorge...VERY windy, and kind of hilly (nothing real steep though)...so my cruise EGT was all over the place depending on head wind, or hills, etc. At one point the head wind so bad I was going down hill (again-not steep) and pulling 20 lbs. of boost to hold the cruise speed. The old '97 (before bombing) would be floor boarded and barely hold 55 mph down the same road with similar conditions This '03 HO 6 speed is one sweet puller ;D ;D ;D ;D

It impressed the cra* out of my buddy who is a non-diesel, pro big block gas motor guy...think I finally made a believer out of him...he said something to the effect of "I'm really impressed, this thing is definately a pulling machine"

Re:Heavy Haul Report

Probe location shouldn't account for this wide a variance on temps. We've never done an 03, but on an 01 with probes stuffed all over the place (each cylinder and 1 in each collector), I never saw much more than a 50F variance. I prefer to have the probe in the rear collector, as the back cylinders seem to run a little warmer than the fronts.

Rod

Re:Heavy Haul Report

I wish I could have got it in the collector, but the probe was just too long. It was adjustable in length but the compression sleve had already been tightened down and it couldn't be adjusted any more. Suppose I could give BD a call and see what they have to say about it.

Re:Heavy Haul Report

I must have a special endorsement in Calif on my Class C license to tow my 5er because it' GVWR is 12,000#. Class C license allows towing up to 10,000#. If my 5er were to have a GVWR over 15,000# then a Class A Non-Commercial. If the GCVW ratings are over 26,000 the Rver must have a Class A Commercial License. If you ride a motorcycle as well you must have an endorsement for that on whichever license you hold Some endorsements require only a written test, some require a driving test as well. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 drivers towing 5ers do not carry the proper drivers license to tow their 5ers. All they need to read the Drivers Handbook. It explains the Licensing requirements in detail.

Each state has its own license requirements which not be in conflict with Federal Requirements.

Re:Heavy Haul Report

Question Rod, how deep does the probe need to be in the port. That may be a factor here. Don't think that I have seen anything on that discussed. I had a cracked manifold so did not drill the bad one. Just installed the ATS and am hooking up the EGT gage now. Hope I don't have to file the compression ferrel off, real PITA.

I ported out the ATS and roughly matched the gasket lines, cleaned it up as far as I could reach with the carbide, made a good difference in the spoolup and looks like it has a bit more power. I will know tomorrow when I pull a load with it.

Re:Heavy Haul Report

i dont pull as heavy as most, maybe 10k but my temps are real close to what MM reports. dpp 4 inch, ez, and x-monitor. mine seems to run nice and cool, gauges really give peace of mind, except when drilling the exhaust manifold. MM i thought my temp probe was on for good also, and to long, but a few choice word manage to get the compression nut to slide. and fireman, bd told me you just need to make sure the probe tip is in the exhaust stream.

Re:Heavy Haul Report

I was afraid to try an force the probe to slide on the sleeve. I had to have the guage for the day I was putting it on and didn't want to take a chance of damaging it. I would say that the tip of my probe is pretty close to the center of the streem coing out of the #3 cylender. I suppose I could get another probe and try somewhere else. Or I could probably cut the compression sleeve off, anyone know if it is a standard size or metric?
