Goose adapter for 5er rails
Goose adapter for 5er rails
I am about to maybe ask a stupid question. Is there an adapter or plate that can attach a goose neck ball to the rails already installed for the 5er hitch? Same theory as the 5er hitch but for goose neck. Thinking is I really do not want to put another hole in the bed, don't want a ball always in the bed and I already have the rails for the 5er and I want to maybe pull a goose for a buddy and father-in-law. The stress would not be any different than a 5er in my mind. Would this be cost effective? Any thoughts?
Don't wory about asking any questions. We are all here to help each other out.
if you had access to a welder, etc, with less than $50 worth of metal and supplies, you could easily fab your own goose adapter. All you'd need would be 4 little ears to accept the pins, a bar on each side to attatch the pins to, and a heavy cross bar to hold the ball. Like a big letter H.

These can usually be found for a cheaper price than the Reese plates.

Valley Mfg. also makes a good one. I only paid $145 for mine, but these are not designed for heavy tongue weights. I bowed my bed floor and rails pulling a 40' flatbed gooseneck trailer loaded with air conditioners. The gooseneck hitch can handle the weight, rated at 25k, but the rails and stock dually bed are too light.
I have one in my truck. It works well, and I have hauled some pretty good weight without any damage. One annoyance is the fact that it shifts ever so slightly on takeoff and the slight "thump" is noticeable. Its called "the Goose", by Reese. I ordered it through Auto Zone and picked it up at a store in the next town (actually, two towns away). I think it was somewhere near $145.
It also tends to sit about 5" higher than a turnover ball (like in the wife's truck) so the front of the trailer is higher. Not so bad for haulin' hay, but not so good for haulin' the camper.
