Going To Maine!

Hey guys,
I'm getting ready to take a trip through Vermont and Maine (from Daytona Beach FLA). I want to take the kids up the Mount Washington auto road. Anybody have advice on good campgrounds near there.

Coming from NH originally, I always loved the bumper stickers "My car climbed Mt Washington".....
going up is no problem, but coming down (especially with an automatic transmission), brakes can heat up and fail pretty quickly !
It is also a fun ride to take the cog railway up the mountain.

You can run into some pretty bad weather conditions . I was surprised to see there has been only 1 fatality involving an automobile .

It is a must do if you have never done that, be advised though, if you have a crew cab long bed they will measure your truck. I went up there several years ago with my 03 F-350 cc/lb and they denied me entry, said my truck was to long. I did go up it with my current vehicle in my sig and they did measure it, it was just short enough to make it. While you are up there visit Conway N.H., you can take a train ride through the gorges, it is absolutely beautiful.

What route do you have mapped out to come up this way?

Hey, I've climbed Mt Washington 4 times! Here's a pic of me (2002 - the old hippy in the tie-dye) standing on the edge of the Lions Head on the way down www.the-wog.com/lionshead2.jpg . Never took the auto road or the COG railway. I stayed here a couple times in the past: http://www.glenelliscampground.com It's fairly close to Mt Washington, once they let me camp there a couple weeks before their actual opening date.

I heard somewhere that they don't allow dually's on the auto road, narrow road, wide load.

Where in Maine are you going?? If you can, get over the Acadia National Park.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I'm getting to Maine via the islands of Vermont. I'm attending my granparents funeral there. I will be traveling on route 2 from Southhero VT to Bar Harbor MN and definitly seeing Acadia.I guess I will have to call about the auto road to see if i fit. Thanks for the info guys.
