Question Getting title for homemade trailer...What to do?

I have a homemade trailer I bought several months ago, and I want to title it. I have not checked with MVD out here yet (I checked the internet site and couldn’t find what I was looking for). I was wondering who (particularly in NM) has registered a homemade trailer, and what steps did you take?

Thanks for any and all the help!

In Colo you fill out an affidavit for a homemade trailer...You lie like a big dog and tell them "You assembled it from parts on hand" (they will want to know the type of trailer box flatbed ect, size, weight and number of axles) give it a value of 300 bucks or so..(you get taxed on that amt) After completing the affidavit they will provide you with a VIN # (sticker) to affix to your frame. Colo also requires a certified VIN inspection, if it weighs more than 3,000 lbs. (sheriffs dept) Prior to issuing the title.

I'm sure NM is different go by and ask your local county clerk..
I would not mention the fact it had a previous owner...as it becomes a "Lost Tittle" issue then...just make sure no vin #'s or tickers is on the frame..give it a fresh coat of paint to make it look new..

No I did not have this conversation with you.... LOL

In Idaho you just say its homemade and they register it as such give you a 10 year plate and your out the door, Don't know about CA (my current state) or any other States. I am still riding my 10 year ID plate (exp 2011 ) Just ask the local office. (don't volunteer to much info they may want more money from you then! )

Sounds pretty easy. I thought about not ever getting a title or registering it because I rarely use it. But it doesn't sound too difficult getting a title. I bought it from a really old guy, who built it a while back and never titled it himself.

Thanks for the responses.

Up here if the trailer was registered before then using the other half of the registration as the bill of sale enables you to register a home built trailer. They will not register one if using just a standard bill of sale, in this case the trailer must be inspected and a Vin generated. This is to try to cut down on theft of utility and equipment trailers, there were over 2300 stolen last year in this area and most guys are using wheel clamps to try to keep their trailers.

In CA you have to show proof of the meterials used to built it.

In Ontario it is very easy just go in tell them it is homemade and they ask Color, # of axles and weight $35 for a plate good for life and you walk out the door plate in hand a VIN # issued just too easy in my opion takes less than 5 mins once your turn in line. Good Luck.

As it's that easy to register in Ontario maybe all the stolen trailers from Alberta are being shipped to Ontario?
