Getting RV"S ready for summer use????

I have owned RV's for years, and the one gripe I have is getting the fresh water tanks ready for summer, I was wondering if any of you have any tricks or other suggestions on getting this done that I have not heard of ???? What do you all use for getting the taste of the winter anitfreeze out?? Thanks,, Rick

Rick the only thing I do is hook up the hose to the city hook up and flush the lines well. Then I put 1/4 cup chlorine bleach per 15 gallon capacity (I use 1 cup total) and fill up the fresh tank. I use the pump to get the water to all outlets and make sure I can smell the bleach at each one. Then let it sit for atleast two hours. Oh, don't forget to put your plug in your water heater so you can sanitize it too. Drain the tank, hook up to your city hook up while the tank is draining and (also drain the water heater) flush the system again. Fill your fresh tank again and flush the system with your pump. Then you should be ready to go. I just wish I could use mine this early in the year.

Thanks, Mntom. I think my problem over the years have been lack of patience when flushing, that gives to the fact after about two to three uses the taste is gone, My nieghbor down the road says that after the chlorine to put a box of baking soda in the tank and run it thru the whole system too?? You or anyone ever heard of that one?? Thanks and Goodluck,,,Rick

Kandgo I have heard the trick with baking soda didn't work for me. I've tried Lemon juice too with no results so I heard somewhere to use white wine so what the heck nothing to loose this year . If that doesn't work time for a new tank.

If you use air to blow the system out and only put the RV antrifreeze in the drain traps and alittle in the black and grey tank than you won't have to go thru all of that triing to get the pink crap out of the fresh water lines. This is the method most of the RV dealer ships use because it's cheaper and does a great job. I just use about 15 20 lb air to completely blow the system out. Works wonders, then leave the faucet valves open and pur alittle RV anti freeze in the drains to fil the traps.

Simple. I don't drink out of the water system in my RV.

On my first trip out I stopped to fill my water tank. I was warned that the water has arsenic in it and not to drink it. I filled up the water tank anyhow.

We always buy drinking water for 58 cents a gallon from Walmart and drink that.

In the spring I just run the faucets until the RV antifreeze has all run out.

I use baking soda in my system after the chlorine treatment and it seems to do the trick for me.

We use our trailer year round and haven't had to go through the drain and flush. When we return from a trip I will drain the fresh water tank and blow air through all the faucets with the water line drains open. Our new trailer has a drinking faucet at the kitchen sink that came with a filter. We also will carry bottled drinking water to keep cold in the fridge.

I do a combination of everything said here.

Right now we are itching to go to the hills but there is too much snow still so the time is spent preparing the RV.

First, I only use the Anti-freeze in the P traps and grey and black tanks(and very little at that. That stuff stinks .

Every spring I use 1/2 cup of Bleach and run it through the complete system, drain it, then fill it again with water and add a full box of baking soda. A couple hours later I will run about half through the system. Then the next day I will finish running the baking soda through the lines, filling the sinks with the water and then pulling the drain to be sure to get that smelly stuff out.

Fill again with fress water, flush system, fill again, and use a water treatment.

On our new RV that we bought this year I will be installing a filter with a bypass, for the drinking water.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I too will look into a filter to put inline to the the cold side of the kitchen and bath sink, I too do not drink much of the water from our RV's as we carry it too, but I do use the bath sink for the the old teeth,Ha and that pink stuff is some of that nasty. Thanks again for all the help, Rick

I installed a bypass on the tank just ahead of the pump and two brass bypass valves on the hot water tank. In the fall I simply drain the holding tank, and the hot water tank, and hook up the other line directly to the inlet of the pump, stick the other end of the hose into the antifreeze jug, and run antifreeze through all the lines. In spring, all I have to do is reconnect the pump and fill the fresh water tank, then flush all the lines. A shot of the water system conditioner every 2-3 years and all is well.
