Garage door size for 5ver

What is a good size overhead door for a 5ver. I'm looking at 14' H but not sure about the width. 14' W enough for a ~fairly straight shot in? BTW the 14' H is also in question because I will be backing it down hill into the garage that is level. ~2' drop in 20'

Need more info let me know. ???

rkelso

Re:Garage door size for 5ver

I have 10' x 12's on my polebarn and my TT just barely fit's in height wise, but I think most 5vers are only 13' or 13.5' 14' on the width would be plenty, you could get by with 10' but 12 would be better. I'd get the biggest you can afford, it will just make it that much easier to back in the 5ver. 8)

I think my doors where about $1,000 apeace and then another $300 for the 2 openers.

DB

Are there any Fivers that are actually wider than 8' (w/out the slides out of course!)? ??? 14' wide sounds like overkill!

Tony

Re:Garage door size for 5ver

I have a 14't by 12'w door on my metal building. It was the only width I could get at 14' tall.
It works great, plenty wide enough. The height of the opening is only 13'. It is a roll up door. I was trying to keep the height of the building as low as possible. With a 13' opening the building wound up being 17'3" tall to allow enough clearence for the roll up door.
I don't know about what you need for clearence because of the hill. Ask the dealers that sell doors that size and see what they say.

I thought anything over 8' wide required a special permit to move?

Otherwise if it is smaller, it may not work.

Re:Garage door size for 5ver

From all I have seen, I plan on going with 12' wide and 16' top plate (which should yield 14 1/2 ' opening). Since having to flip the axles, my clearance on the 5er is approx. 13'5". Get the most you can afford.

Learned the hard way on this.

10w x 12h is not quite enough.

12w x 14h should do it for most all applications.

Re:Garage door size for 5ver

Mine is 100" wide (plus awnings) and 12.5 high with single air and 13'8" with double air. Depends on what you anticipate in the future. How about selling the house sometime to someone with a motorhome? Now you need about 42' long to cover most of the big diesel pushers unless the guy has a freight train at 45'.

I have built several for customers - - usually went with 10' wide, 14' high, and whatever long. Did one at 48' long for a 45' Prevost. If you have a straight shot at the door, 10' wide is plenty if you are pretty good at backing.

Re:Garage door size for 5ver

Well the straight shot is compared to the curve I go around now with my TT. The set up for this would require a slow fairly straight S turn. My concern is that I will be navigating uneven terrain which may cause the trailer to rock back and forth as it enters the building. The building is going in the most level place I have and still will need some work but it would cost a fortune to have it even clost to flat from the drive into the building. :'( :'( :'( Thanks for everybodies input on this. Dieseldude4x4 thanks for the wisecrack

Re:Garage door size for 5ver

I drive down into my Polebarn as well and it really doesn't make that much of a height difference. The main thing that's a pain is the clearance for the rear bumper on my TT, it just bairly clears the concrete pad.

One other thing you could do, and I know a few that have, is to let some air out of the tires if it's a real tight squeaze.

Here is a pick of the drive down into my Polebarn. The pick was taken standing on the aprin on the front of the building. There is also some other picks of the inside of the building in that allbum as well.

DB
