fuel economy/boxes

Any suggestions to increase fuel economy. Are boxes worth it. I pull a 8x20 12,000 lb rated enclosed trailer with anywhere between 3000 to 8000 lb load. 95% interstate miles at 75 to 80 mph. I get right at 10 mpg or lower when pulling. Average a little over 50,000 miles a year and fuel prices are killing me.

Ya they are worth it but it ain't going to improve milage. Of course this is just from my exsperiances I know that some trucks improve like 11 miles per gallon.

I agree, I hear a lot of claims about chips improving fuel efficiency but I actually see a slight decrease on the two trucks that I've ran them on. What did help was the intake I put on my truck increased by about 2 mpg

I diden't notice any improvments from my intake but I haven't checked either, what I have noticed on the intake is the egt will come down much faster I shut my truck down between 350 and 400 degrees this will prevent the oil in the turbo from crystalizing or something like that.

Any box that significantly advances you timing will gain you some milage. That's pretty much guaranteed. Given the number of miles you drive I'd certainly give it a try.

The stock timing is set to achieve certain emissions goals at the expense of fuel economy and power. Many boxes will "correct" this.

Running stock I'd get around 16 mpg (mostly highway, mostly empty), with the smarty on #5 or #3, both maps that advance timing, I get around 18 mph. I don't get into the pedal like a lot of guys do.

I put the Quadzilla Xzillaraider box on mine and before that I was getting 15-ish mpg...now I'm getting approx 19 mpg. That's not towing, obviously, but just an example. I haven't towed anything w/ the box yet.

Ive got an 06 with dual stacks and airaid intake and i put on a bully dog triple dog. I normally run on crazy larry mode with no problems when empty to get the best mileage (around 22) Ill set it back to performance mode (90 hp) when pulling because egts get crazy. no problem yet with 34000 miles.

You need to decide whether you prefer fast driving or good milage. Ten MPG at 80 MPG with a load is about as good as it gets. Driving fast requires horsepower, which requires fuel. You can get 50% better milage (15 MPG) at 55-60 MPH.

Let's see. 600 miles at 75mph = 8hrs. 600 miles / 10mpg = 60gal x $ 2.60 pg ( avg ) = $ 156.00
600 miles at 60mph = 10hrs. 600 miles / 15mpg = 40gal x $ 2.60 pg = $ 104.00
That's $ 52.00 difference / 2 extra hrs = $ 26.00phr
In my line of work at set prices 2 hrs of my time is $100.00. I come out ahead $ 24.00/hr at 75mph. I think I'll hammer down. Thanks guys.

My XZT tow box has raised my mileage 1 to 2 empty, thats at 60 to 65 mph, havent towed in summer with it yet, all my mileage is done on paper, the over head is out of wack. Im sure with the extra power my foot wont be so far into it towing so it should be better, I hope

i noticed an increase of about 3 mpg when empty running my normal commute

climbing the rockies and around town with my xzt

however, at what price

when i get on it dropping from 4 to 3 at speed i notice a lot of tc slipping

i towed the 5er up the mountain with it once so far, i noticed the same slippage

i think i will keep for light duty stuff but disconnect it when towing heavy, the stock tc doesn't seem to like it

Put a RokTek crank sensor on your truck and gain an extra mpg from the advanced timing.
