Can you check on the mobile home axles? I have heard the some states want to make them illegal to use on trailers. Not sure if anything ever came out of it but talk though.

The "mobile home" axle scenario is a popular old wives tale.

The only limiting factor are the "mobile home use only" stamped tires.

90% of all axles under mobile homes are 6,000 Dexters.

Many equipment trailers come factory equipped with these same axles, reason being that the 14.5 tire is much lower profile than 16" and available in load range-G/14PR.

D.O.T. legal tires are readily available.

In most cases, regular 6,000 Dexter hubs/backing-plates are a direct bolt-on swap.

Bear killer is right I had a guy call me sat pricing a flatbed to replace his current trailer which has mobile home axles under it he was from alaska, he has a moving co he was moving someone down to oklahoma wow what a trip that would be. On any trailer the limiting factor is always going to be the tires usually the axles are rated higher than the tires. As far as outlawing mobile home axles I have never heard of it or read anything on it

Makes sense that the tires would be the problem... Figure that someone on here would know the real deal.

in most cases the tires are your weak link most compaies use 10 ply e rated tires but even that tire will come up a little shy on the weight rating and most people don;t want to spend the extra money on a better tire but you know as well as I do very rarely does someone worry about the trailer rating, you got stuff to haul and it fits on the trailer you load it and away you go.I had a trailer ordered last week that required 14 ply g rated tires they were more money obviously but this particular trailer needed them to be rated correctly. But buyer be ware there are companies out there that will put used tires on and they will also use d rated or less so always spec your trailers when pricing them, I have had customers tell me some horror stories of what they have been thru necks breaking off etc.

We've been getting 7.00 - 14.5 12 ply for $55 each. They hold up real well, until you catch the edge of a railroad iron.
Anyone know where you can get either 6 hole or 8 hole rims for 14.5" tires?

I see them from time to time.

They are easy to make out of open-center rims.

Lathe-cut a disc of 1/2", or thicker, plate that fits rim center.

Lathe-scribe a circle for bolt-pattern, i.e. 6-1/2" for 8-on-6-1/2" pattern.

Mark and drill the bolt pattern.

Lathe cut the center hole almost through.

Knock out the center and dress-up with a die-grinder.

Weld this plate into the rim, maintaining equal distance from edge of rim all around.

most people follow that old addage if they got stuff that needs movin and theres a trailer there they are going to move it, plus there are two ways peolpe rate their trailers some rate it for the sum of the GAWR others take the weight that is on the truck and add it to the GAWR then take that number as the GVWR so technically a trailer with two 7K axles can be rated at 16000# these methods are both legal I believe

Mine is rated at 14000 gross and I have had 12000 on it in this load. Didn't go very far or very fast. I usually limit the load to one of the bigger JD's, 8000 pounds, or two red ones.

The two red ones were just a little over 8000.

Update, started to build the trailer but Im stuck on the spring hanger mounts. Now I ordered a kit from Truck Springs and It doesnt seem right to me when I have the hangers/springs and shackels in place. The middle spring is lower and the front and rear are at a bad angle, 3" difference in hieght from front spring mount to rear spring mount. Springs are 25.25 from eye to eye. Im thinking that the springs should be level and in order for that to happen considering the equalizer is so big ( 4" from top to bottom plane of the holes where the shackles mount) that I'd need to cut the equalizer hangers down 2" to get them to be level.

I can use this kit and have the springs level if I use longer shackles, also do the shackles need to be mounted at a 45* angle or can I have them mounted straight up when empty?
