PacBrake makes a rock solid unit that is easy to install and built to last, take a look in our articles section, there is one in there about installing a PacBrake.

The Dodge dealer told me that the E-brake (Cummins Approved)which is sold by Dodge is the only unit that does not void warranty and actually comes with the factory 7yr/70,000mi warranty. I had an estimate of 500 to have them install it so the total price is about $1700+/-. The dealer told me that the factory unit is electonically activated by a switch that is installed on the shifter. Any comments??

Thanks - - now we know what we are working with. The Jacobs Ebrake is the one recommended and supported by Dodge. You would have no problems with most any good ebrake with the stick shift. The Jacobs is NOT $1700 installed for YOUR truck (that is for the 2003 on). You might want to check with your dealer and find out what he can get one for. Not too hard to install yourself if you can follow directions and are savvy to how to handle a wrench. Sure is great both when hauling and when running solo - - I use mine a lot.

Sandpuller,
Cheapest I found so far (have not checked e-bay yet) was $575 +shipping through Mechanicsville Dodge (1-800-559-6698) For my '01 it is P/N: 82205577, which I think is the same for your rig. I'm going to do the install myself....don't want any dealers touchin' it.

If you have a standard tranny, you can get your e-brake from
Mechanicsville Dodge, in Mecahnicsville, VA. just outside Richmond.
They have a web site.

They have about the best price for the Jake. I paid around 550 for mine some time ago. Took it to a dodge dealer and had them install it for 160 bucks in about 1.5 hrs.

Sorry Moose, did not see your post. We both got a good deal.

i have an o1. i purchased my jacobs from my dodge dealer for $625($675 list). i am not a mechanic and was able to install my in about 4 hours. they come with excellent instructions and the pre made harnesses are easy to work with. the brake works very well and has been reliable. and like someone else mentioned, i dont like any one working on my truck if it is something i can do. ps this required basic hand tools and a drill.

I did the one on my 03 myself, and it is straight forward. The local Cummins parts house may beat Dodge on the price. The main difference for the 3rd gens (I think) is that a vacuum pump has to be added.

You can download the directions from Jacob and take a look.

Hope that's helpful... Photos are easier to see on the computer, anyway.

Having the brake is handy for winter warmups, too.

Jeff in TD,

I'm picking up an 04 SLT 3500 this next weekend and am interested in the Jake, what did it set you back if you don't mind my asking?

This will be my first diesel though I have driven several different military versions.

I installed mine myself. It wasn't hard to do. No special tools needed.

I installed a BD Power exhaust brake on a '03 HO quad cab with switch on 6 speed shifter. Nice thing about it is pull the switch on and it drops the cruise control out so you don't have to touch the hydraulic barakes or the CANCEL button on the steering wheel. Have been towing a 6K boat and trailer and really like the exhaust brake; looking at a fifth wheel with more weight. Cost about $900.00 and did the install myself. No vacuum pump nessary with a manual. Exhaust brakes are good and will spoil you when towing.
