Exhaust Brake

I own a '03 Dodge Quad cab 5.9 liter HO Cummins turbo diesel w/ 6 speed manual. I am looking into an exhaust brake for it as I haul a large boat and am looking into a long fifth wheel. I have installed the Firestone air ride bags on the rear, Edge fuel control module, True Flow foam air filter, boost gauge and pyrometer. I have seen pros and cons for both from the manufacturers. I need so real people advice. I don't want to lose the performance gains from the module but do need the extra stopping power especially on those long Colorado grades.

Re:Exhaust Brake

I am refering to turbo mount versus inline exhaust brakes. Please make recommendations.

Re:Exhaust Brake

dogger...I do not have any experience with exhaust brakes on the '03, but I can tell you it will be your single most favorite modification after you have used it a while, especially if you tow frequently.

Here is a link to some more info, tho...

Re:Exhaust Brake

I have a jake on my 2000 3500. It work great in the hills with
the trailer in tow. It works great without the trailer! The only thing I would change is the method of engagement. I think now, I would perfer to have the manual shifter mounted activator vs the automatic 1.5-2 second delay I have as set up when installed.

You can get one from your dodge dealer or cummins dealer.
Got mine from Mechanicsville Dodge in Mechanicsville VA. Had the best price of all. They have a web site.

Re:Exhaust Brake

I've got the PacBrake. I pull a 10,000# GVW trailer and am happy with it. It works great and I don't even touch the service brakes coming down 7% grades (until I need to slow for a corner). I suspect the Jacobs and Banks products will perform similiarly.

I did the install alone in about 3 1/2 hours with air tools. It will be easier to do your own install if you can get some help. The worst part was getting the factory exhaust elbow off.

Good Luck,

Re:Exhaust Brake

I have the Jacobs E-Brake and have been very happy with it. As mentioned above Mechanicsville Dodge seemed to have the best price.
The brake works as advertised and is a very big help when stopping a heavy load (I tow a lot with a flat bed and farm tractor GCVW 25,000-27,000). I have also crossed over Raton pass on I-25 (towing 11,500) and did not have to touch the brakes at all on the way down. I Ran in fourth gear most of the way down with the brake activated. The speed held very well at 45MPH.

I do not feel that you will be sorry if you choose the PAC brake, others have spoken well of it also. But for me it came down to price. Plus Cummins recommends the Jake so it will not void the warranty.

Hope this was some help.
