EPA won't release their research for peer review.
As near as anyone can tell, their exhaust regulations are based on a couple of 30+year-old studies that couldn't pass peer review when they were written.

We did have a problem in the post WW II industrial expansion. Most people burned their garbage in a 55 gallon drum in the back yard. A "clean" running oil burner gave off #2 (clearly visible) smoke. Cars put out an obnoxious amount of lead, NOx, and hydrocarbon (oil smoke mostly) pollution. In the 70's, my wife had a chronic bronchial cough just from breathing city air. Moved her out in the country and it resolved in a couple of years. There were times when I was in Charleston (NAVY) that you could hardly breath or hold your eyes open because of the sulfurous emissions from a paper mill and coal burning power plants.

Those problems have long since been solved. The air in this country is far cleaner than in most other countries in the world. Much larger population bases and growing economies, like China and India are polluting their air and water like we were in the 50's and 60's or worse.

And CO2 is not a pollutant, it's a critical nutrient.

There is, however, a huge amount of money involved in government backing whatever your financial interest is.

I think it was Eisenhower that warned us of the military-industrial complex. We now have added to that the pharmaceutical-government complex, and the alternative energy-government complex, the insurance-government complex, and others all screwing up our lives.

Usually my overhead lie-o-meter is anywhere between 5 to 12 mpg over from my actual hand calculation weather I'm towing or not. I believe (especially some of the guys who own the 4th gens and there are bunches it seems where I live w/ 4x4's that are probably never get used for towing nor go off road) that they think the overhead lie-o-meter is what they are really getting in mpg's. I've asked a few and they have told me that the overhead is "right on" even after doing a hand calculation (they pause a bit after I ask if they ever do hand calc.) @ 20 to 30 mpg after towing a heavy loaded goose neck and or a 5th wheel!

 

When you're getting 400 miles between fill ups and you believe the overhead display.....thats called denial.

 

With VERY little city/stop and go driving I get an honest 20 mpg running summer fuel solo. I generally get 9.9 to 10.3 pulling my fifth wheel but drop an empty 2400 lb car hauler on and I get about 15 mpg. This past November I actually saw 6 mpg while pulling my 5ver into a very strong head wind on winter blend! I almost came unglued with that low mileage.

I do believe that most who claim amazing mileage are going strictly by the lie-O-meter and actually believe it. There are those that just like to lie but you can generally figure out which ones those are.
