Dually tire sizes?

Does anyone run 215/85/16's? Any other sizes other than 235/85/16 (smaller not bigger).

I am doing a dually conversion and noticed that 215's are a good 1" shorter than 235's which is roughly equivelent to having 3.73 with 235's versus my stock 3.55's.

This equates to about 71 MPH @2100 RPM in 6th instead of 74 MPH @2100 RPM in 6th.

I am wondering if this'll be an advantage pulling heavy loads. Can't really think of any need for the larger tires as they are just larger/heavier/more expensive, although 215's might just look ridiculously small...

When i had my 2nd gen. i went from the 215's to the 235's. Filled the wheel well's in and they are rated for higher weight's. Try this site for playing with tire sizes.http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I took the 215 off and installed 235. They fill the wheel openings better and slow about 200 rpm, just perfect at 70 mph. My buddy took off his 235 and put 215 and is perfect at 65 mph. How fast do you usually drive??

Hello all,i also have a question about tire sizes. On my 05 3500 dually,i run 235/85/17.i was wandering if i could run a wider tire on the front like a 255. My truck only has 7000 and the outerpart od the tire is already rolling off.if not wider tires to solve the problem what else? any help would be appreciated.

On my dually, I helped eliminate the outter edge wear by keeping the tires at a little higher pressure, switching back to "E" rated tires, and most importantly, slowing down on exit ramps.
duallys will corner like slot cars......

I don't see why not.
The only reason against it I can think of would be having to use an odd sized tire on one side in the event of a flat front tire, unless you're planning on carrying two spares.
(one for the wider front - one for the narrower rear)

Yes you can. I'm running 235/85/16's on mine with lots of clearance between the duallies. Uniroyal Laredos

You should not run a different tire size on the front than you have on the back if you have a 4x4. If the tires are same height it will not matter. Having 2 different tire heights will wrap up your drive train while in 4x4.

I'm not sure what your definition of a lot of clearance is.....the 99 and down dually wheel with a 235 on it will typically have from about 1/4 - 1/2" clearance between the rears - this not an acceptable amount of clearance as it is unsafe and illegal.......can it be done? Of course, but it can't be done properly on the 99 and down wheel without an additional spacer. Remember, the tires are NOT allowed to rub each other......if you use your dually for what is was intended for, the 99 and down dually wheel WILL allow 235's to rub when the truck is loaded. I have 235's on my 3500 and fabbed some 1/2" spacers to allow the tires to have enough clearance so as to never rub.

If you really wanted to, 265/75's could be used on the front and 235/85's could be used on the rears of a 4x4 as they are the same height but the 265 is 30mm wider than the 235.

I'm thinking about 255/85/16s on the rear of mine, changes ratio from 4:10 to about 3:77, but the width is 10.04 inches compared to the stock 215s which is 8.46.
I have 225/75/16s on it now and no clearance problem on the duals and the effective ratio went from 4:10 to 4:25.

Does your outer still fit on the raised part of the hub as to be hub-centric, or did you swap lug nuts? I'd like a little more clearance between my 235's (BFG Commercial TA), but I'm either going to do a spacer, or when I get aluminum wheels, get 'em for a truck with more offset to give me a bit more room..

The last 1/16" of the hub-centric grabs the rim to center it.....it has worked this way for over a year loaded heavy........I'm not concerned about it as the stud holes on the rims are a very tight fit on the wheel studs.
