I drove thru no problem, saw a guy standing there filling out his paperwork, truck parked "over there". I asked him & he said "yep ... won't fit".
KNinja, I have an 03 6spd 2500, 25' 5th wheel. Get an exhaust brake if you don't have one already. I tried both the warranty supported Jacobs and the Banks, and ended up using the Banks hardware with the Jacobs electronics. If you tow in the hills, it is a Godsend.
When this question is asked, I see alot of Dually guys jumping all over it saying a DRW is the only way to go, but most don't even look at what the person (asking the question) is towing. If you aren't towing heavy, and drive the truck in traffic and the city then a SRW is not a bad option at all. If you tow heavy, and/or live out in the boone docks then a dually is easy enough to drive.
I have lots of places where I park my SRW that a "dually just won't fit", alot of parking lots do not allow spaces for the extra width, and don't even consider parralell parking on an older city street... sure you can do it, but it doesn't make it right to hang out the extra 20"+ inches in the street.... same for parking lots, sure you can wedge them in, but can the car next to you get the doors opened? I rub both tires on my little trailer (tracks about 4" outside my truck tires) at my banks drive through ATM, and I will hand any of you guys a $20 spot if you could get your dually through there with out damage.
Duallys are great trucks, but they aren't for everyone. I have towed with a DRW and my current SRW the same trailer and the same load and since I tow nothing more than about 9K I don't have any eurge or need for a dually, but if I asked this questoin here I would have gotten the standard "get a dually" response

I see alot of duallys in my area with the fenders torn off or badly damaged??? I don't know if it was from bad driving, loose of control, or maybe someone thinking that they can drive with a blown tire and it finally came apart and took out the fender (that most dually drivers forget to mention).
Not bashing on anyone, but DRW's aren't always the answer to someone that needs a occassional tow vehicle and daily driver.
Alot of dually drivers say that they get more respect when on the road... well IMO that is because "at one time of another" the duallys where driven by old people (retired pulling RV's) that weren't real good at driving, or farmers work trucks and they really didn't care about a scratch or dent. Not because it is a dually, but because of most people think of the person driving it (just like an old caddy, lincoln, etc., or a ratty old truck)....
So again, not saying either is better than the other (both have pros / cons) but it seems like the statement "Get a dually" should be right over in the right side of this screen with the little "smiley faces" since it is used so much...

Blah, blah blah-the question at the begaining " is a drw better? to tow a 5th wheell" -the short ans. is yes........the long ans. are all the excuses why others do not own them. So to stick with the thread the only ans. is yes to that specific question w.o. i.d. all the pequiler circumstances.
I know this tourqed off some,but lets say you get hit with 90 mph side wind and have a semi go past at the same time,, what would you rather be in ???or, what might you be upside dwn in??

Like I said earler,never herd of anyone saying "I wish I had a smaller truck" esp. when the going is less then ideal!!

I have never pulled anything other than a tag along with a SRW truck but have pulled a gooseneck with the dually (I imagine the 5th wheel isn't much different). I REALLY like the stability that my dually offers for that task.
1. Extra cost for tires ... marginal
2. less traction .... I have experienced that when I wasn't where I should be
3. won't fit .... takes practice and sometimes a little exercise walking from a better parking space.

Perfect example, the question was NOT "is a DRW better to two tow a 5th wheel" the question was "do the dually have any benefit OTHER then when towing a fifth wheel" Blah, blah all you want

....Not torqued at all, but this guys is towing a long distance once a year and a short distance probably twice as much, then he needs a dually??? Maybe he should just get a top kick, or small freight liner since it is bigger, so it most be a better all around truck even though it is only going to pull a load about 2% of its life cycle

I agree completely. I tow heavy 5th wheels with a lot of pin weight. I don't want to be concerned about truck GVWR issues, overloaded tires, etc. so I've always used duallies. Buy the right tool for the job.

I agree entirely, and happily own a SRW 2500. In my case, I rarely if ever tow. My truck usually hauls only butt.
Honestly, a Tacoma or Frontier pickup would suit me just as well. But they don't have a hot-roddable diesel that lasts forever and nets good mpg, and they don't have solid axles and a beefy trans.
So, really, there was only one choice for me-- a Dodge diesel pickup. A Ford couldn't be hot-rodded like I wanted, a Chevy has a wimpy chassis, driveline, etc.

I've never had a problem fitting through a drivethrough...just have to be careful, and shut the engine down so the person on the other end can hear ya. Pulling my 5er is a piece of cake...I have more truck than what I need. It kills me when I see somebody with a shortbed 3/4 ton pulling a triple slide 36' Raptor toy hauler....or bigger
and if you can't drive a dually on snow & ice safely, stay home.
