do the dually have any benefit other then when towing a fifth wheel?

I agree completely. I tow heavy 5th wheels with a lot of pin weight. I don't want to be concerned about truck GVWR issues, overloaded tires, etc. so I've always used duallies. Buy the right tool for the job.

I have a 2500. I am not one of those guys who tries to justify a 3/4 ton. I will tell you that I ordered my truck with the 'camper special' sway bar, which comes standard on the 1 ton (my 2000 year). I think the 1 ton has/had an extra leaf spring. I don't feel my truck sway at all.

In my experience, so far I have not needed the 1 ton. The 1 ton looks good and the two extra tires add insurance. I personally believe the insurance of the DRW is very valuable. I've been lucky, haven't had a lick of trouble with my SRW.

If I had it to do over again, I would get the 1 ton. And I highly recommend getting the longest wheelbase you can get.

i made this decision 4 months ago. i owned a 01 dually and loved it. i just bought the 05 srw for my personal needs which where
1- i need to air down when i pull my 5er in the sand at glamis, pain in the but with the dual tires. i even put on new mudders with extended valve and the first trip, one of the extended valves came loose, rubbed a hole in one tire wich then took out the other. 2 freakin flats

2- every now and then i get lazy and like to go to the car wash.

3-wanted to go down some fire roads before but couldnt without taking a beating on the fenders.

i really dont feel too much of a diff puling same tailer between the 2. there is a very slight diff in the swaying.

DRW vrs SRW

My cousin bought a 2004 CTD 4door SRW and he teases me saying he's grown up now cuz his truck doesn't have the TRAINING WHEELS like mine......... But he also admits he likes the tough look stance of mine.

If you want to tow heavy loads most of the time, the DRW is the only way to go.

If you rarely tow heavy loads, then I would prefer the SRW.

I also own a DRW and I prefer my SRW in all conditions other than heavy loads.

And what does that do to our effective rear end ratio, hence our towing ability?

My last truck was a 2500 with beefed up suspension - - tried towing my fiver with it. Not fun. Fantastic difference with the dually.

What do you mean FiverBob?

245/70/19.5 are just a little bit taller than 235/80/17's.

The difference is like 657 vs 627 revolutions per mile. You could always get 225's if you wanted even shorter.

I didn't try to calculate it, but that seems small. It was just a thought. If someone is towing heavy and on the edge, sure don't want to exacerbate the problem.

kninja here is my 2c. worth we have a srw one ton 05, had a 03 3/4 ps, 01 5.2 gas, 00 dually ps, 95 ctd dually. have pulled a cat 4x4 backhoe 13400# on an over the axle 22' dual tndm bruton 8000# , a 4 horse lite line alum. living qrtrs mid tack and 2 water tanks, a 3 horse slant 4ft short wall alum sooner, with all the fore mentioned trucks. duallys feel better IMO on corners i guess the training wheel thing, and also when you have a flat on the trailer, never had a flat on the truck.i solved the sway or mushy feeling when we got the 05 one ton srw ctd as i said before it doesn't squat much under the cat. as far as a 5th wheel or gooseneck the tongue weight such as it is , on a professional or balanced trailer shouldn't be that much of a factor. i have also pulled a 34' with 14' slider tongue pull with 3/4 and didn't notice it.we parked at stock shows and rodeos all over texas and the problem with a dually is the same as a 4 dr long bed not enough space to get a good swing at the space works better if you back in , my experience. oh well good luck!
