Cargo trailer recommendation needed...

Hi All,

Looking to purchase a 20 to 24' cargo trailer for a cross country haul of tools, furniture and what-not. Would likely sell it on the other end of the trip.

I've looked at Haulmark (seemed OK), Carmate (was not impressed) and need to look at Wells Cargo. Thinking about buying new as there is not a lot of used inventory out there. And, don't want any trouble on the trip. Am also thinking that a cargo trailer that could double as a car transporter would be easy to sell?

My truck is set up with a 5th wheel hitch, so a gooseneck that could convert to a 5th wheel might work, although these seem pricey.

So, what would you all recommend for cargo trailers models/brands, and configuration? I'm thinking 16" wheels, 5K axles, car tie downs, maybe vnose, etc. Hoping to keep the price reasonable, however, want to take the least loss on a resale.

Thanks, Steve

wow you are the first person that i have ever heard that liked the haulmark over the carmate. if you get a tag then think about the v-nose but that will add to the price of the trailer and not really do anything for your re-sale.

I have a 20' Haulmark that I have towed my car in for about 5 years now. Not one problem. I think it is a great trailer.

The side door on the carmate I looked at, had a cheesey cast metal lock that would pop open with very little force. The fit and finish of the skin was not good.

Thanks for the tip on the v-nose.

I like those better than the Wells Cargo. They make an in bed mount I'm not sure if it is a 5er or a goose and they have a bumper pull.

Let us know which one you like and why thanks

Thanks for the comment so far, appreciate it. The TPDs look like nice trailers, I'm in the northeast (right now), so those do not appear to be an option.

How is resale value of cargo trailers in CA? Checked craigs list, not a lot of inventory...

A buddy of mine just bought an MTI, tho smaller than you're talking about. I have a Haulmark (Thrifty line) and his MTI seems much nicer, tho I've had no problems with mine.

We just got an Interstate-1 Trailer and love it! www.interstate-1.com They were willing to do anything we wanted and still came in $2000 cheaper than the others, (Haulmark, Wells Cargo and Pace). The fit and finish is excellent and they pay a lot of attention to detail, and I'm picky!

I have had my 24 foot Pace Shadow since 1999. I only use it to haul my cars to car shows mostly in the southeast. I have been very pleased with it so far. In fact, I just changed the original tires last month. I have never had any problems at all and would definitely buy another from them. It even has all the original bulbs still in place. Not the cheapest or most expensive, but a good value for the money in my opinion.

Only suggestion I have is to make sure to get upgraded axles, I had a cargomate 24' with two 6,000lb axles and used 235/85 r16 tires so 12,000 gvwr had it loaded to 13,000lbs no problems. you get better brakes. most trailers out there are only rated to 7,000 lbs giving you 3 to 3,500lbs of stuff to load into it.

I don't give any discounts, to anyone:

My thinking is, it is not very wise to buy a NEW trailer to turn around and sell it. Let someone else take the hit on a new unit. Buy a used one, you won't lose as much at resale time.
