Can you lower the GVW of your trailer?
Can you lower the GVW of your trailer?
I'm thinking about doing some hauling and I want to stay at 26,000 GVWR. Can I legally buy a trailer that is rated at 20,000 lb and register it at 16,000 lb? I just want to get a trailer that is better than I need, not just good enough for what I need.....
In pa you can with little hassal. The last DMV guy I went to to lower the reg. weight of my dodge 3500 didn't know anything but after percisting he got the right form from the state dept download web . Save around $200 and most of the time I'm haulin sunshine. But I got it when I need it.

DOT or HWP will go by what ever is higher, the reg weight or the gvwr on the tag. I checked with my trailer manufacturer to see if they would reduce there gvwr and send me a new tag. No down side for them, it would just make the trailer safer, but the answer was a sound NO. So today, I got a NON CDL class A. Sort of funny too, my gvwr is over by 200 lbs......26200.
Well, I just don't want to have to keep track of my miles by state for the IFTA tax. I have to do this now for my driver where I work and it can be a pain in the butt. I guess if I can register the trailer lower but DOT will let me tow more due to the trailer GVW that may work well for me on occasion.....
Thanks guys...
