Camper Tires

??? ??? I know this has been gone thru, but over an hour reading the archives didn't help. Lots on pressures, rotation, etc., but not what I need. I have a set of Avon All Terrain SXT tires that came with the truck from the dealer, mounted on the optional wheels that look to be about 8" wide, as best I can tell with a tape measure. They're LT285/75/16, Load Range D, rated at 3305 lb @ 65 psi. They're almost worn out after 24,000 miles, (yes, I do rotate them) and I need new tires - preferably some that will give better mileage. From reading the archives, it looks like Goodyear or Michelin will get the nod, but I can't find any tires this height (32&quot in load range E. My 'new' camper is pretty heavy, and I'd like to run more pressure in the back tires. I saw references to load range F, and to 12 or 14 ply tires, etc., but I can't find such things at the local dealers. Any recommendations, or suggestions ?? I also remember reading some time back, about some tires "squirming" or causing erratic steering. With the Avons, the truck drives like it was on rails - solid & straight. Any help there ?? Thanks all. Lar.

Re:Camper Tires

My truck has Firestone Steeltex r 45 (265/75r16) load range E (10 ply). That was on the truck when I bought it. The tires were about half wore then and now after another 21,000 miles I am thinking about new ones. I hauled an old 10' camper (read heavy) and had no problem with tire squirm. The truck was even a pleasure to drive. I would put 65 psi in all four and I could just throw one arm over the steering wheel and ride. I took it on a 2,000 mile trip and it was a pleasure. I have never been a fan of Firestone, but, I am happy with these tires.<br>Tom

I don't remember seeing anything over load range D in a 285 size but lots in the 265 size. Try checking the web sites for Michelin, BFG, Bridgestone, etc. You might want to look at your wheel capacity also. Most of the aftermarket I looked at were rated for a max of 3400 lbs.

Re:Camper Tires

The wheels are the optional fancys from DC, that I ordered with the truck. Not sure what capacity they are rated at. An ex-diesel mechanic at work recommended a heavy truck tire shop, rather than an automotive one. I'll take a look later next week. The heavy tires come in 235/85, not larger. Both Michelen and Goodyear make &quot;G&quot; rated tires at 3750 per tire. I can tell you this, they are indestructable. They carry 110 pounds of air. I have never had a flat on the truck with them on. The Goodyear tire is G-159, been great tires for me.

Re:Camper Tires

Sounds like what I'm lookin' for - if they'll fit those rims on my truck. I'm going to check in a truck tire shop this Friday. Thanks. Re:Camper Tires

The G-159 tires are made for a 6&quot; wheel, the Dodge is 6 1/5 which is fine. The Ford wheels that I run are 6&quot; with a larger back space for the duals.

Re:Camper Tires

OK, does that 6 1/5&quot; include the forged aluminum wheels on the '02 2500 SLT package ?? The B.S. brochure doesn't list the widths.
