Break-Away Controller
Break-Away Controller
I am getting ready to re-wire my trailer and I will be ADDING a break-away. The horse trailer will only be used for occasional use throughout the year when I need to move a horse or help someone move. I think it would be very unlikely to use the trailer on a weekly basis, ever. I am currently looking at buying a basic break-away (ie, Tap for about $30), is there any reason I should consider a unit with a charger? I dont think I will have the trailer hooked up enough to justify a charger. I could just bring the break-away battery into the shop every so often and let it charge overnight.
When installing the controler, is the unit directly inline with the brake wire? I just need to cut the brake wire of my 6-way and feed it through the controler and back into the brake wire of my 6-way post cut?
Thanks, I am just forecasting before I begin the re-wiring process.

Are you talking about the trailer brake away? It should cost about $6.00 at Napa but then you need a battery on the trailer. The brake away is just a switch so the wire comes from the battery you put on the trailer to the brake wire on the trailer if it brakes away the cable closes the switch and the brakes come on. You can charge the battery though the plug from the truck and should last along time.

Just be sure to have the trailer plug disconnected before tripping the breakaway controller, or else you'll fry your brake controller in the cab by feeding +12V back through it.
