Angry Brake Controller

Does anyone know if there is a way to test a brake controller to find out if it is working right? When I step on the brake petal, it don't seam to stop my rig as good as when I reach down and use the hand slide on the controller. By the way, I'm pulling a 29.5' fifth wheel weighing approx. 11000 lbs.

Thanks in Advance

It might be one of those fancy ones that need to be level to work right.

But even then if you crank the controller to max and just barely step on the brakes you should feel the trailer brakes.

If that doesn't work, it is probably toasted.

I definatly recomment the Prodigy.

YUK. Had one of those - - do yourself a favor and go buy a Jordan or Prodigy, preferably the Jordan.

Yea what Bob said I have the Jordan in my current truck but I have the BrakeSmart for my new one..........as my new one is still not here, I have yet to install it. But the Jordan is a really good controller................. I would change it to this new one but my truck has the adjustable pedals and I just wasn't sure how that would work with the Jordan as the cable has to hook to the brake pedal. Good luck

For what it's worth, if you're controller has a gain ****, you can test the controller with or without the trailer hooked to the truck by connecting a backup lamp to the ground and to the brake leads of the RV receptacle. Pressing the controller with the slide should max the lite to it's brightest output. After releasing the slide, adjust the gain and use the brake pedal until you get the lite to the same intensity that is if the controller is really working.

Well that would work on say a Jordan but on the one he has I think it uses a pendulum type accelerometer to determine how much juice to apply to the brakes. So with the truck stopped it will not put out anything or at least very little. The hand switch will work but the brake pedal will not. When you hit the brakes all it does is activate the unit the pendulum decides how much braking to apply, Also this test will not be putting a real load on the controller so it will tell you if it is working but not if it is functioning properly as it may not be able to put enuff current to give him any braking. But like you said it will tell if it is working any at all.
