Brake Controller for a 2008 3500

Hi, we have just purchased a lightly used 2011 Arctic Fox 27' travel trailer. Our question is what brake controllers are available that work with the factory installed exhaust brakes on our 2008 3500 Dodge Ram Diesel? We have a 2003 2500 Dodge Ram Diesel with a BrakeSmart unit on it which we like very much but unfortunately are not being made any longer.

We would like to be able to use the exhaust brake and have the trailer brakes kick in also without having to touch the brake pedal (which deactivates the exhaust brake).

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Can you just transfer the brakesmart to the new truck?

I have a Maxbrake which is very much like your Brakesmart (i think). I don't know of any brake controller that will function without applying the service brakes.

the maxbrake is exactly like the brakesmart. many people are using them. but you do not want to use them like you are trying to do. the maxbrake is the only true proportional controler made know that smartbrake is no longer made. it gives exact same stoping power to trailer as the truck. learn to judge your downgrades, shift to a lower gear and kick in the exhaust brake as needed to keep it below 3,000 rpm. we made our harness for the 08 but i understand maxbrake now has them. also pac has come out with a add on that increases the stock 6.7 turbo brake to 330 bhp

I love my Maxbrake. The E/B on these trucks is really good too. Last summer going down 7% grades I had to actually step on the skinny peddle to keep things from slowing down too much with the TT. Personally, I'm not sure I'd want the trailer brakes to come on with the E/B.

Can some with the '08 enlighten me on the use of the service brake disengaging the EB as OP claims. My '07.5 does not disengage the EB when I step on the brake pedal.
