Brake Controller

A while back I had a problem with my trailer lights. I had a trailer hooked up and all of a sudden I had no lights, except for when I pressed the brake pedal. The continuous light on my brake controller went out as well except for when the brakes were pressed. Last night I found the 40amp fuse under the hood was shot. I replaced it and trailer lights work now. however my brake controller acts like it it constantly on. I put the fuse in at the parts store and by the time I got home (15mins) the controller box was hot!!! When I pressed the brake the light did not intensify as if it was increasing braking. If I tried the test button then it would go to normal...then go in increments right backup to where it was with brakes applied and stay there. I have a brake force controller. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
